Default Civil War book

Can anyone recommend a good book about the US Civil War. I want something not terribly long and not a novel.

I know you said you didn't want a novel, but. The Killer Angels is one of the best books I have ever read in my life. Its a first person account of the battle of Gettysburg by the Generals on both sides. For a novel it isn't that long. This book was the inspiration for Ken Burns to make his documentary film on the Civil War.

Where you looking for a book with lots of pictures and illustrations about the entire Civil War?

Battle Cry of Freedom.

Award winning account of the Civil War. Good read.

Anything that doesn't portray Lincoln as a savior of the beloved United States.

I may just try the novel you recommended. It looks like I'll be heading down to the Carolinas and will want to take some time and go either south to Civil War history heaven or north to Washington to do some sightseeing. If I check out the CW history, I want a refresher that I can read beforehand. This is fairly soon so I don't have a tonne of time so wanted an easy historical account.

Problem is Lincoln was the saviour of the Union. Although most books do glaze over the whole suspending habeas corpus and those other annoying legalities.

"Struggle for a Vast Future" has lots of maps and illustrations etc.
