Default TV Furniture...

Is 3-400 dollars really an average price for a TV stand these days.

I purchased a 52" LCD and now have it sitting on an old blue chest with all my A/V gear in a cabinet next to it.

I want a TV stand where I can place everything underneath and have it as the only thing on that particular wall.

I really can't bring myself to pay Future shop that much for a bit of Fibre board....

Any suggestions ?????

Build something or hang it on the wall for 100 bucks.

Costco has nice media units for 200 or so. They're definitely pricely though. Don't buy it at an electronics store.

I bought a bookshelf from ikea for 80. Placed it on it's side. Works great, holds my amp, ps3, and everything in between.

I thought I got a good deal buying this one used for $400...until I saw it at Costco for $250. Damn Costco and their incomplete website.

I have my 42" plasma on this TV bench from Ikea. For $300, it was the best living room solution I could find, especially because so many of the "modern" TV stands were not wife friendly in terms of living room decor.

http://www.ikea.com/ca/en/catalog/products/20102516

I took the glass out of the two side compartments and replaced it with black speaker cloth. I dont use the adjustable shelves in those compartments so I can put my 18" mini-tower speakers in there. Then, in the middle shelf section, I have the receiver, PVR, and PS3.

That's a cool set-up.

The BESTÅ series is pretty decent. Lots of options for drawers/doors, etc. It can be as cheap or expensive as you want it to be. Lots of good ways to set it up for less than $200.

What size is the tv?

Have you thought of wall mounting the flat screen? A lot cleaner and less than $200 will get you one unless you go to the higher end models.

EDIT: For your peripherals, you have a few options... smaller shelving units that aren't "TV stands" could be used and are generally cheaper than "TV stands"... or you could install shelving on the wall (very cheap) and organize your peripherals on those.

Not interested in Wall mounting as I change my TV room around every now & then just to mix things up a bit.

I would like something in the style I listed that is open. For some reason my HD box gets really hot when in use.

My tv is 52". Something slightly bigger would allow me to put my kids PS2 and Wii on each side. All the games could be stored in the cabinet or a smaller separate DVD case.

I also have 2 old school big ass speakers that are part of my surround system.

Watch out for the Leksvik that you linked. When I was looking for something in the family room, I checked that one out too. The cubby holes were about 1 inch too narrow to fit my Amp and my A/V Receiver in.

I did end up using the other Leksvik TV stand though, in the family room, under a wall mounted TV. It is taller and just wide enough to sit my center speaker on (this room didnt require being quite as wife friendly - I also have two massive 4.5ft tower floor stand speakers in here). The TV stand has 3 very wide shelves in it, which can hold 6 components. The one down side to this unit is that it is not vented in the rear, so I had to cut my own vent holes so that I could close the glass doors without blowing up my equipment. It isnt the most elegant solution, but for $200 it is a nice stop gap solution until such time as I can afford to build my real home theater room and move all the stuff out of the family room. In your case, the 52" TV would be wider than stand, but the stand is probably about the same width as the table top pedastal of the TV.

Laslty, over in the corner, I have this Leksvik bookshelf. It holds the DVD's that arent so child friendly in the closed off section, and some books/dvds on the upper shelves.

I picked up a great stand at BestBuy in/around Boxing Day for my 50" Plasma. Itwas the Init 42-60" Flat-Panel TV Stand(NT-C1205). What a great unit. It fits my tv on top. My satellite receiver in the middle and blu-ray and A/V receiver on the bottom. However, looking at the price now I must have got it at a smokin' deal. I picked it up for $225. Now it's showing as 379.99. Still a great unit for the money though.

We have the Markor from Ikea too. Ours is stock without any of the sweet mods described above but no complaints from us.

We've got this one from Ikea

http://www.ikea.com/ca/en/catalog/products/10147737

It worked out really well, it's on it's side and has room for the PVR, DVD recorder, Wii, PS2, stereo (hook the computer up to the tv and stereo to watch movies and stuff) and storage for DVDs and games.

You can also buy inserts for a couple of the spaces if you want drawer or cabinet space.

As it stands right now I have;

DVD
PVR
Stereo Reciever
5 Disc CD Changer
Dual Casette Deck
VCR
PS2
Wii

All that I want to put in this new cabinet.

Hopefully I can get something suitable.

TXS for all the suggestions. I'm gonna head to Ikea this afternoon and have a look.

We had alot of trouble finding something that worked for us when we made the switch to LCD. We looked at Ikea and several other furniture stores and either they were outrageously priced or not what we wanted. We ended up seeing the perfect stand at Canadian Tire. I think I have seen the same manufacturer in Walmart recently as well. Cost us about $100 bucks, but it was on sale.

2 top drawers, and 2 shelves on the bottom. We fit all out AV gear there plus lots of room for my daughters books.

I bought my Samsung 52" in Dec '08 from Futureshop by bargaining a ton at different locations until I found a guy willing to give it to me for exactly what I wanted. Anyway, the stand they don't have anymore up on their website but it was virtually identical to this one and was a Z-Line one too. I bought it for $250+tax and it was listed at $512+tax at the time. Was very happy with the purchase until I tried to purchase some other stuff from the guy a few weeks later and was told he was a temp and was basically let go because of the deal . I don't know why considering he got manager approval in front of me, but oh well. Anyway, a steal nonetheless. Stick to your guns if you're going to be dealing with Futureshop. Their customer service for the most part, stinks, but you as the person with the money should hold the ball every stretch of the way. The markup on furniture is through the roof.
