Steve Fonyo stripped of Order of Canada

Steve Fonyo, who lost a leg to childhood cancer and later ran across Canada to raise $13-million for cancer research, has been stripped of his Order of Canada membership because of a string of criminal convictions which date back years.

Fonyo is only the third (fourth?) person to lose his Order of Canada membership.

Alan Eagleson and David Ahenakew are the two others. (Conrad Black might be the fourth?)

I saw him on the news last night, must have been an older interview. He was telling the reporter about his checkered past. He says:

"Well, I have had some impared driving charges, some fraud stuff and assault charges, But it's not as bad as it looks"

Fonyo has been a train wreck for years. too bad.


PS: I would have much rather seen Brian Mulroney's Order of Canada stripped!!.....hopefully he's next.

Ran into him in a grocery store in the 90s...well saw him and his friends. My wife and I commented that he looked like a criminal and his friends were worse. Shortly after he got nailed with theft.
Feel for the guy, he obviously never got over the loss of his leg and used Terry Fox's misfortune to gain fortune himself.
