Adding Page Numbers to a pdf

I've got some large pdf files which need to have the page numbers shown on each page (thanks to a client requirement). However, this is a problem for me as my pdf files consist of a multiple of other files assembled into one and numbering outside acrobat won't work.

Is there a 'free' way I can add page numbers to each page in a large pdf? No special numbering, just starting with #1 on the cover and going from there. I found a program called A-PDF Watermark which adds a dynamic watermark which can be used to insert page numbers, but it's not free.

Any ways to do this without paying for anything? I use Acrobat 8.0 Standard.

Under the Document menu, the first item should be Header & Footer, then pick "add." That should allow you to do what you need.

I also have Acrobat 8.0 standard.
