Default Where to gig in Calgary?

So the past few months, I've been trying to get a band together. Right now, it is only me and a singer, so we have been writing all sorts of songs with me just on an acoustic guitar and him singing, thinking that we could just play an acoustic set until we find the right people to play drums and bass. Anyways, we have a fair number of songs, and I have two questions.

What are some good locations to play in Calgary for simply an acoustic set?

And once we do get a drummer and bassist, where are some good places to play that kind of set?

Thanks,

(PS, if you are a drummer or bassist, and want to be in a hard rock band (influenced by Led Zeppelin, QOTSA, Them Crooked Vultures, Pink Floyd, Soundgarden, The Smashing Pumpkins etc...), feel free to PM me)

Don't you have to join some kind of musicians union in order to get a gig in one of the usual places?

A good place to get started would be Verns (622 8ave). They have shows there almost nightly and it wouldn't be too hard to get a gig there. Make sure you at least have a demo recorded before you approach a lot of these places because that will help you a lot.

There are places in Calgary that strictly do cover bands and then the few that offer original music depending what you are going for. There is also a facebook group called 'Calgary jam listings' that will help you out a lot if you are looking to just get on a stage and break out a few tunes.

If I wasn't in two projects already I would totally love to play some bass for you, but I can throw the word out for you if you'd like. You can always place a free add in FFWD looking for musicians as well.

Hope this helps.

Is bass hard to play? I play guitar and have wanted to learn bass but I am too poor to afford even a sh** one.

If you need a Thrash Metal guitarist, PM me.

Ive been playing for about 11 years now. Its pretty easy to learn how to play simple stuff, but difficult to learn and apply the nuances correctly. I gave lessons for a while and everything - its a super fun instrument to play and learning to slap and pop and do all the fun tricks you can do is a real blast.

One of my heroes for slap (I draw a lot from his techniques):

He actually uses flamenco style strumming with the slap techniques - Its so fun to play like this and if you like Primus - Les' favorite player is probably Stanley...
