I need a job. Any suggestions?
Hopefully I'll get at least a couple of serious responses.
I'm a full time University student so only part time. I'm also in my last year so no more than 10-20 hours per week.
I do want to work so, while I appreciate the advice, save the "concentrate on school and don't work" posts.
I've been having some problems finding suitable jobs recently. I can only work evenings and weekends, like most students. Obviously the new year won't be the busiest time for job searching but I'm tired of being unemployed.
Any suggestions? Where did you guys work when you were in Uni? Retail/restaurant jobs seem obvious but it can't be limited to that. If anyone has very specific advice as opposed to just companies or general suggestions please keep in mind I'm in the NW.

Any chance you could get a part time job related to the field in which you are studying? Employers love it when the new grad has already had some resume experience in their "new" field.

I was a lifty at COP in university. If you like to snowboard that could be a good one, although they may be fully staffed for the season at this point.

I worked at a movie theatre when I was in college. I could get plenty of hours on nights and weekends, a very flexible schedule and free movies. It pays about the same as retail, which isn't a lot. But when you're school workload is light, its super easy to pick up more hours.

That is a consideration of mine but from my searching there are few part time opportunities that pay. Lots of volunteering opportunities though.

Personally I would go apply at Telus, Rogers, Bell stores because it is a slack job, can be decent money if you can sell and most likely you will be a mall so lots of eye candy walking around.
Prostitution is also another great way to make money with very few hours worked. (had to get in my non-serious answer)

I am seriously considering doing so. I just don't know if I'm a very good salesmen. Anyone with experience? Will I have to swindle people?

Just retail. Liquor store, drug store etc.
I held an assistant manager position for 2 years when I wasn't in school so I have tons of experience. I've never really had to sell anything though, but I'd say I'm well versed in customer service.

Volunteering for job experience is for suckers imo. If somebody is making a dime off you, get your cut.

I worked at Telus doing the 411 for a bit quite a few years ago. Tonnes of students and as a part-timer, you basically have lots of choice in what shifts you work. Job isn't that great, you basically sit in front of a computer all day and find numbers but it's a job.
"Hi, I was at a restuarant the other night on 17th. What was it?"
"Uh... I have no idea, what's the name of it?"
"That's why I'm calling you."
"Well, I can't find the number if you don't know at least part of the name"
"@#$@ you. you suck, this service sucks!"

That's fine you have customer service/retail experience. When I got hired by Bell my only experience was working at golf courses.
Selling is easy if you know the product and just remember your ABC's. Always Be Closing.

I used to have a buddy in school who worked part time at Safeway.... but that was when they still paid good money. His hours were pretty flexible (they usually stay open til 10:00 pm most evenings) and his bi-weekly pay cheque was pretty good.
How about some place like Home Depot? They are open late in the evening also. I would definitely stay away from a retail store in the mall though. My step-daughter worked in one (LaSenza) and the pay sucked.
Costco pays pretty good (I know 2 or 3 people who worked there) but they are only open till 8:00 pm most evenings.

What about dealing poker at a casino?
Pretty slack job, pay is alright when you factor in tips. Not sure what kind of pay you're looking for though.
Cargo companies at the airport have evening/weekend shift work.

I would consider all of those to be a step back. I don't just want to be a cashier or filling shelves. I've spent like 5 years doing that already and 2 of those years I was managing those people.
I've considered applying at a bank as a teller but since they aren't open weeknights (AFAIK) I would only work Saturdays and I don't think all banks even have Saturday hours.

When I was going to school I worked at the Den (University Bar) as a bar tenders assistant. Basically tapping kegs, re-stocking beer fridges, ice, etc.. The wage sucked ($6ish per hour) but the tip-out was great. I'd work from around 8pm to 2am on friday and saturday and make close to $200 in tips per weekend.

Stay away from the Blackjack table though... if you can't count.
That would be a real bitch of a job if you're not good at addition.

Deliver pizza. I used to pull in $350-400 a weekend in high school delivering for Pizza Hut. You get paid to sit in your car and listen to music, and late in the evening you can study or read or whatever.
Amazingly low-stress.
