Default Another Truck Thread

I'm in the process of shopping for a new vehicle and I'm just looking for some advice. I'm leaning towards purchasing a mid-sized truck (something along the lines of a GMC Canyon or a Ford Ranger). My budget isn't huge, so I'm probably looking for a used vehicle.

I don't really need a truck but I've always wanted one and I figure why the hell not? Anyway, I don't want to spend more than $18,000 if possible and I would like something to haul my dog/golf clubs/hockey gear/bikes/climbing gear around. I would also like a vehicle that can do well in winter.

What would the all-knowing peeps at calgarypuck recommend? Any advice is really appreciated as I'm new to this.

Welcome to the truck world! (hopefully )

I've never owned a Ranger or truck around that size, but all I've heard from Ford Ranger owners is that they're brutal on gas. It could just be coincidence that everyone I've spoken with who owns one said the same. Perhaps your budget would make you say "hey it's not thaaat bad".

I've read online ( i THINK pickuptrucks.com) that the Canyon is suppose to be one of the best trucks on gas. I think Kybosh thats what I read (it was a nice few weeks ago now).

I am a Ford guy so I can't say purchase the GMC . But I'd certainly look to balance out the gas-milage on the vehicle in comparable with the price of the truck your going to buy. You may actually save money in the long run if you purchase something a little more. I find if people are selling trucks for really cheep, usually means they're hard on gas and they're trying to ditch them.

Canyons are lame and only 5 cylinder. Go Tacoma or Frontier. Since 2004 I've owned a ranger, frontier and now tacoma. The Toyota is way better than the competition.

Can't really go wrong with a Ford F150.

And Tacoma's are no longer as good as they used to be.

Just a couple thoughts here.

I used to own a 4x4 '01 S10. I once had your line of thinking, but eventually it changed and I sold it. I used to always want to haul things as well, but most of them were small, such as the things you listed. The problem I had was unless I bought a canopy/topper for the back, then everything was in the open and I couldn't leave it unattended. Sure was handy for the odd big item when I went shopping, but otherwise, most of the stuff was packed in the cab (leaving the initial reason for owning the truck no longer applicable). I was hesitant to get rid of it because of winter, but I've actually found my subaru legacy better to get around in than the S10. Make sure you weigh your options with a small SUV.

Get a Canyon or Colorado and have the dealer throw in a toneau cover. Forget a Toyota since these days you're paying thousands extra for comparable quality.
