While nazism will probably never gain power in government again, we are seeing a real growth in Europe of neo nazi movements powered by angry whites and spurred on by an easy target caused by the world economic collapse.

These skin head and neo nazi groups will continue to hide in the shadows while gaining power. Its a frightening threat of violence.

That is so lame. I've been to Aushwitz and it is a very solemn place (obviously). That sign stands out most in my mind above everything else I've seen in Europe. Hopefully they catch the losers soon.

When you look at the number of growing demographics in Western Europe in terms of immigrants the stats are pretty staggering.

Security is pretty lax, no wonder Poland was so easy to conquer.

They stole an enormous sign on the huge front gate in plain sight. The only thing bolder would have been to do it in broad daylight.

Do they even have a security guard?

They don't need to hide in the shadows. Europeans are way more open about their overt racism (not sure if thats good or bad).....especially in the eastern parts, where nobody had seen a black or asian person till the early 90's when the curtain fell.

It is sad that we live in a world that refuses to respect what he held sacred by others. Whether it is stealing the sign, or descrating the Virgin Mary, the Mother of God, it is sad that we can't show more respect for one another.

I have also been to Auschwitz, and find it unbelievable that someone would choose to steal that sign. Maybe they feel like they missed out on all the fun of torturing and killing so they have to do something now. Sad.

I haven't been to Auschwitz, but I was to Mauthausen-Gusen in Austria. It's nowhere near the size of Bergen-Belsen or Auschwitz, but it was still...terrifying. There wasn't hardly a word said during our whole trip through there. I was on a trip with 100 other students from around the world all 16 to 18, so you can imagine how loud the buses we took would get from time to time. After the trip through there though, it was silent. The place was just so emotionally draining on everyone that we all just went to sleep for an hour or so.

I'll never forget walking past the wall where 100's of people were shot, where the shackles were hanging out for the prisoners to be chained to. The guide said that babies would be thrown against the walls until they were dead. Seeing this dark, grungy basement with a dirt floor that soaked up the blood of those beaten to a pulp. Going into the actual gas chamber was absolutely one of the most awful feelings a person could experience. It actually seemed to reek of evil, and stink of death. To see the ovens where the bodies were burned...awful doesn't begin to describe it.

The one thing that really, really stuck out in my mind though (other than the gas chamber) were the memorials for people. In the room just before the ovens, and in the crematorium itself, there were pictures and plaques of victims everywhere. And on one of the plaques of a Jewish victim, somebody had scratched a swastika. The disappointment and rage I felt towards humanity at that moment...I don't think I'll ever feel like that again. For somebody to desecrate a photograph of a person who was killed during the Holocaust like that...it's unbelievable.

I assume the comment about Poland being easy to conquer was made in jest, since they were able to hold out longer than France in spite of receiving no aid and being attacked on two fronts, something that no other country (besides the Nazis) had to contend with. Find another country in the world in 1939 that could have fought the Nazis and Soviets successfully at the same time.

No, I was dead serious.

Anyways, what they should do is just nicely ask the Germans to make them another one....

"Work will set you free" those words have stuck in my mind from the moment I herd that is what the sign reads, one of the cruelest lies in human history.

Oh come on now, you can't really be equating that cartoon with this crime.

Do you respect everything that is held sacred by others? Cows, tobacco, the sun...

The theft of this sign is a crime against actual people, it's not an opinion.

Poland (and France) also had a lot of collaborators. In fact, most countries that were "conquered" by the Nazis, had internal situations that made it easy to be conquered. For many of them, it was also a choice between communists or fascists... and that was it. Poland had their fair share of home-grown nazis in the 1930s.

Isn't the leader of the fascist party once headed by Mussolini merged with Berlusconi's party now?

Fascism has been growing steadily in Europe for a number of years now. Children of Men, here we come!

I still dont understand how they stole this thing, its huge, its Cast Iron so its heavy, it'd probably need 2 to 3 guys to carry, its up high, they'd need a ladder and tools, someone has to have seen something.

I just cant believe it. Not to mention, WTF are they going to do with this thing? You cant sell it, its the only one there is really, aside from the replica, they'd kinda know it was stolen, you cant keep it, it wont exactly fit over the average fireplace mantle. You cant throw it out, I think it'd be pretty obvious if it were sitting in a dumpster.

Actually, there is a pretty big demand for stuff like this on the black market. Anything of historical reference or value has a price tag.

Really big things like that can be surprisingly easy to steal, simply because nobody thinks of the possibility before it happens.
