AdWeek's "Best of the 2000s"
Uh oh...
Brand of the Decade: Apple
Product of the Decade: iPod
Marketer of the Decade: Steve Jobs
Campaign of the Decade: Apple, "Get A Mac"
Out-of-Home Ad of the Decade: Apple, "Silhouettes"
Digital Campaign of the Decade: Nike+iPod
Quote:
Though the brand almost petered out in the '90s, last year consumers told Interbrand that Apple was the thing they couldn't live without and the one they found most inspiring...
It was mid-October 2001. The country was reeling from the 9/11 attacks, but the folks at Apple sent out their invitations anyway. The event would unveil a new device that HQ had kept under tight wraps. All the invitation said was: "Hint: It's not a Mac." And it wasn't. It was called the iPod.
|
Of course I had to post this with an Apple twist, but it's actually a pretty interesting list. There's a quite a few categories and they even have a parallel "Reader's Poll" for each of them. Super Bowl Spot of the Decade is pretty interesting...

Fixed.
Sorry, I hate the whole fixed thing as much as anyone, but it had to be done.
The worst part about those ads is that Microsoft even made Windows crappier trying to make it more Mac-like.

I hate those ads as much as anyone (and I'm a Mac guy), but Microsoft made Windows crappier because they chose once again to react to someone else, instead of innovating and going in their own direction. If a single ad campaign from a competitors causes a multi-billion dollar company to shift it's focus, then there's something wrong with said company.

People don't "buy articles" in AdWeek. It's a rather highly-regarded publication.
There's no need to hate. Microsoft managed to come in 6th in one of the categories, so it made the list too. (On a serious note, Google sure got a lot of lovin.)

As someone who worked in the magazine industry, I can testify that Apple barely even acknowledges most publication's existence....never mind paying them off to appear in a good light. I worked for an industry-revered product design magazine (something that one would imagine Apple would like to be in given their whole business model is based around good design) and most of the time they didn't even want to send us their products to photograph, even when they were getting awards for them.

Man, those "Commercial of the decade" ads are pretty good.
I don't remember ever seeing the "swear jar" commercial.

Why is it that the first response to an Apple thread is always a PC user using terribly cliched, unoriginal sarcasm to show that Mac users are smug?
There are a tonne of smart, original ideas that come from Microsoft but the corner offices always seem to make an interesting idea into an uninteresting product. Things are changing there though with the likes of Ray Ozzy in charge of software. As long as they can concentrate on their core competencies and not chase every shiny new thing to come out of Google/Apple and poorly copy it, they should have some interesting product releases.
Microsoft products are becoming more "Mac-like" in that they are faster, more secure, and easier to use. Microsofts recent Win 7 ad campaign is quite good.

That's an interesting take on things, considering Hitler physically controlled every single form of communication in Nazi Germany... While AdWeek is an industry-leading, independant, weekly adverting publication in a democratic society.
Mind you, a company you publicly despise has received some awards that it doesn't even care about... So I can see why you'd make that comparison.

You can go ahead and hate those 'Get a Mac' ads all you want. They were the most popular ads of the decade, hence the title. This was without doubt Apple's decade. I think the next one belongs to Google.

Man, for the longest time I was wondering what the fata you guys were talking about with Apple being on top, i kept thinking it was the
American Legacy Foundation Truth that won but then I finally clued in that it was the reader's choice.

lol, you are defensive, aren't you, Fanin80?
There's no doubt that Apple has done a masterful job of marketing the past several years, but yeah, these reviews are blatantly over the top. There are some definite fanbois involved in the selection process.

You know, before reading the last couple of threads on Mac versus Windows, I had no particular preference other than windows based computers were cheaper. Now, I'm really getting a dislike for the Mac brand after reading Fanin80 and the other fanbois. I think you aren't accomplishing what you intend.

Which is awesome news considering I'm not intending to accomplish anything. What did I do? I posted the results of of a highly respected publication's end-of-decade awards.
The only "fanboys" in this thread are the PC ones. It's really quite something how you PC boys like spew your own little brand of hatred and then figure out a way to blame Mac users for it.
If you look really really closely (in other words, it's incredibly obvious), you'll see that I haven't said one thing about PCs at all. Yet, I still get the blame. Pretty awesome hey?
(I'm not going anywhere. Until the mods decide to make this a "PC Only" board, I'm going to keep making threads about Mac stuff for us Mac users to discuss. I honestly don't care if PC users like it or not. How awesome is that?)

So let me let this straight. You post that Apple swept the awards as put on by an admittedly well respected organization, Adweek which at the end of the day, is about Advertising and Marketing?
Whoop-dee-doo?
If you're trying to paint Apple in a good light, shouldn't you focus on the awards around software / hardware vs what it's image and brand consultants have cooked up?
If the AICPA chooses to give Apple Inc its "Financial Statements of the Year" award for its wonderfully descriptive MD&A, should we post about that too?
Where are you going with this?

You know what guys?
It's a thread about some advertising and marketing awards that were handed out. It has appeal to people like myself who have an interest in the advertising and marketing industry, and it also has appeal to people who like commercials. Lastly, it has appeal to people who like Apple products, because they won quite a few of the awards.
It's really that simple. This isn't a mac thread and it isn't a PC thread. In fact, it probably shouldn't even be in the tech forum at all, although quite a few of the awards have a tech flavour to them, so I guess it makes sense.
Regardless, either discuss the actual thread or don't bother posting. I'm not going to get suckered into another moronic little pissing match over someone else's misgivings.

Why does he have to be going anywhere with it? I don't understand how these things deteriorate so quickly. If you don't agree with threads like this the solution is quite simple ... don't post in them and they will naturally fall off the front page. Instead people come into these things arguing about how lame it is to stand up for a company like apple all the while standing up for a company like microsoft.
There's only about 6 of us on this board that follow news like this, yet they always seem to generate a ton of discussion.

I started a thread a while back that I thought would generate some discussion, and Fanin80 jumped all over me.
I loved Apple ads. Now they are annoying as hell. GJ on the awards. No one cares.
