Well first off I'd have to say that sucks ass, feel like you got the short end of the stick there no questions asked. I was planning to buy my mp3 player from future shop and buy that warranty but I feel after reading this I will take my chances with buying it elsewhere. I suggest taking to to a different futureshop maybe or even calling the head office.

Also file a complaint with the Better Business Bureau. FS will be asked to respond to the complaint and if they do not resolve the dispute satisfactorily, they will get a black mark against them.
At the very least you should get some satisfaction out of this and it could get their attention.

Furthermore this left such a sour taste in my mouth I am going to photocopy some posters regarding FutureShop and their practices and I am going to put them up around the parking lot of the futureshop at Northlands. And tape one to their front door. Just a completely pathetic store.

It's pretty much the same story with all large retailers. Futureshop is no different than the rest of them. Too bad the big-box complexes are now the centres of commerce, and the mom/pop shops are disappearing everywhere.

Thanks for reading that and you know what I really hope that you don't go the future shop route because the prices elsewhere are the same and from my experiences with London Drugs and other companies they are worlds ahead. The Warrenty covers nothing at all that really would happen to the mp3 player for there is a problem where it seems as though even if it wasn't your fault they will say you abused the product. The guy all but admitted it was due to the tempature difference and then he used the term abuse and that got me really upset. And then they tried to justify serious damage away by saying a watch was scratched.
I am going to take this to the Better Business Bureau (thanks for the suggestion) and call their head office but this experience has left a very sour taste in my mouth and I likely will not purchase another product at future shop for a very long time if ever again, and I used to buy all the movies, cds, and a computer at that store. If I invest around 15,000 and my family (who also have been rather put off by the incident) in the products then I would expect some sort of loyalty to be reciprocated in terms of understanding the nature of the complaint. Instead I get all but mocked.

If you see signs around a parking lot warning customers of the store and their policies would you not take notice. I won't picket but I will make sure people know the policies, for their sake and I will admit it for my personal revenge.

My advice to anyone looking for mainstream electronics..browse Futureshop and other places and buy at London Drugs.
Simply the best service and best no hassle return policy (they even suggest you try whatever you're getting for 15 days), and price match, most times (if reasonable) without a competitors ad. Regular prices are cheap too. (The other place that is good for service is the Bay, but thier prices are too high usually).
Also, their website is fairly sparse....but they usually have a wide selection...you go in there thinking you're going to buy one stereo, you come out with something usually better, for a cheaper price. There is a lot more in store, including great in store discounts on discontinued and floor models..and their floor models are not hacked on or full of dents and scratches like you get at Futureshop.
Starting to sound like a commercial, but I won't bother with the bait and switchers at most electronics stores if I am looking for something mainstream.

That will go on the little poster. It will be put up around the mall I am thinking, outside, and on different boards at the University, and I am tryingto think of some more places. I am also planning on posting my story on differnet web sites that I visit. I was also thinking of phoning into a radio station during the open line time to vent a bit but I don't know whether I should go that far.

Futureshop are a bunch of weasels.... I applied there and some of the questions they asked were unbelievable... the entire interview was basically 20 questions asking "Have you ever screwed your future employer out of money?" They are a paranoid bunch over there and I even declined their offer to be hired because of their ways. and I even responded telling them that their company are a bunch of snakes from what i've seen as a customer and I refuse to work for them.
I still buy from there, but I do not deal with their staff.

I was thinking the afternoon show. I was really disapointed when it was no fault of my own that a 450 dollar product broke and they tell me that even though i purchased the insurance/product service plan (that cost $100!) on it that one would expect would help me when it came to damage of that nature. I think the word should get out. I don't work for london drugs but from the stories that I have heard there is no way I would choose FutureShop over that store. Amazing actual service.
Edit: Jordon I really wouldn't even buy there anymore... no difference in price and you could potentially save yourself a huge headache.

You should try another future shop and lie to them... just say when you bought it there was a slight crack and you thought nothing of it and just recently you noticed the crack grew... No need to get into the science of how Glass reacts to temperature
There is nothing wrong with lying to Futreshop.

Well, I have no negative story about Future Shop, but I have a positive story about London Drugs.
I went to the Heritage/Mcleod location to buy a router. There were 3 to choose from, and one was priced significantly higher than the other two. The salesguy actually took the time to explain why buying the most expensive one was not the best choice. I was surprised & grateful. The mid-range router that I bought almost 2 years ago is working fine & I saved 30 bucks. I know that not every salesperson is a shuister(sp), but I actually had the more expensive one in my hand & was prepared to buy it (hey, my forte is cars, not computers).
Because of that guy's honesty, I've gone out of my way (not too far) to buy certain things there. Things that are pretty much the same price from store to store get bought at London Drugs because of one guy. Not bad if you ask me.

Little insider information, since I worked for the FutureShop for 4 years in the early 90's. Thier CSP plan, or extended warranty, is pretty much that. It covers you for parts and labour due manufacturer's defect due to normal use, it dosen't cover you for anything else. It does not cover things like crystals cracking due to extreme cold. Or if you drop your laptop causing the case to crack. Its laid out pretty clearly, but I was always amazed that people would complain about it.
Did you request a copy of the CSP terms and conditions when you bought it?
Not that I'm taking sides here, but the biggest heartbreak that people have is that they don't ask the right questions about warranties and are upset when they can't get assisted.
By all means call the head office, they might fix it just to get you out of thier hair, or they might tell you the same thing that I have. If you file with the BBB or Rutherford, your likely not going to get very far.
Just because you paid an extra hundred bucks, dosen't mean that its a carte blanche coverage. There's no such thing.
And sticking posters on thier door . . . bad idea, its a major fine for defacing private property if you get caught.
I'm not a big fan of any extended warranty plan because it really gives you no rights beyond what the manufacturers warranty gives you, your just adding time.

yeah I'm begginging to like london drugs as well I know a few ppl that work for them and they are really good, I've been looking into buying a new computer and I dont' have enough credit history to get a credit card. One of the ppl I know told me to goto London Drugs saying they usually aren't too bad with giving ppl the financing when I went in the fellow in the computer department told me it's not the best deal in the world and that if i could get a credit card he would reccomend that I do that first, just for that I'm pretty positive I'm going to be going to them unless I can find a better deal somewhere else
sorry remembered another thing why try calling the guy that does comsumer reports on global I think his name is Tony Tiegh or something like that I can look on there website and figure it out for you

Honestly that rarely if ever works. Electronic store employee's have become so jaded by customers trying to screw them over that they're willing to refuse the return and give you a manufacturers phone number as opposed to trying to get an rma number for that product.
When I was managing the FutureShop in Medicine Hat, I was more than willing to take the risk as opposed to eating inventory.
