Default Fan-Based Content - NIN Fans Release Blu-Ray DVD

On Jan 7, 2009, Nine Inch Nails "leaked" over 400GB of raw HD recordings from a few shows on their Lights In The Sky tour. A number of fans including some pro and semi-pro video and audio producers got together in a not-for-profit project called "This One's On Us".

On Christmas they released the results of the project: a multi-cam and fully audio-synched recreation of the Lights in the Sky Tour. They're released it as a free download in just about any format you could hope for (DVD, iPod, PS3, AppleTV, 1080p MKV, etc.) You can sign up for a physical copy of the BD or DVD with artwork and booklet.

At first I was pretty skeptical and expected another crappy bootleg. I downloaded the 1080p MKV version and I'm completely blown away. The production quality is incredible, the audio is excellent, it's really quite astonishing that a group of fans put this together for free.

There's already a spin off project to do something similar for the final NIN show at the Wiltern in LA.

I highly recommend checking this out if you're a NIN fan. I'd like to hear about other similar projects; I'm sure this type of thing has been done before.

I DLed the DLDVD version and may DL the Bluray version for when I finally get a bluray player.

The interesting thing about this project is that there are actually 2 projects running side by side.

First, the fans were going to do their own DVD. All fan shot stuff, not all in HD. I believe that project will still see the light of day and is from the Vegas show which was the final Lights in the Sky show.

Second, the reason the fans were doing this was because Trent said there would be no DVD because Interscope wouldn't give him permission for the songs they still owned (a little mad that he went w/o a record company much?). Apparently Trent wanted to do all kinds of crazy shiznat like a 3D DVD/theatrical release or something.

So, upon hearing about the original Vegas project he decided to really rely on the NIN community and just release the raw footage himself. It was from 3 shows, with multiple cameras per show. Each had the same setlist so the shows could be edited into one awesome DVD. Interscope couldn't complain either because they can't stop Trent if he doesn't make money off the stuff.

Mick is right, this is not just a bootleg. In fact the DVD menus and stuff are just absolutely amazing. One thing NIN has is a very, very strong online community who are extremely tech savvy.

I don't know of anything even similar to this project. I've seen/heard lots of Zeppelin bootlegs (some even show up in the Led Zep DVD from a few years ago) but never anything as professional as this.

I actually think it is superior to the official NIN release Beside You In Time which came out 2 or 3 years ago.
