Default Door to door "security" salesmen?

Had a young guy at the door tonight professing to be from Paragon Security (I think), talking about recent neighbourhood crime activity etc. He had a shiny binder, but not much else. I cut him off rather quickly though.

Anyone else ever have these clowns come to their doors?

Yup, I tell them that I have many guns and own a dog.

No security system needed.

They say, okay thanks for your time.

I Never open my door when the door bell rings unless I know who it is.

I have a Bay Window where I can easily see who is at the door.

When the door bell rings, I look through the window, I don't try to sneak a peek either, I don't care if they see me looking, It's my freakin house!, If it's someone I don't know, I close the blinds and go about my business. They can stand there and ring-a-ding as long as they want!

Some people feel obligated to answer the door or phone, not me. Infact, I get a little pissed when people come onto my property and touch my stuff.

My sidewalk!

My front steps!

My door bell!

My Door!

Don't touch My stuff!

You probably didn't ask for ID either. I'd be concerned that they're casing the place for a possible B&E later.

oooooo saw this on Marketplace I think, whatever that show is with Wendy Mesley. Anyways, it's a scam, they'll go door to door claiming that there's all this crime activity in the area and say that everyone else in the neighbourhood has signed up, yadda yadda. The worst is they scare old people into thinking they need it ( which is what the marketplace report was about ).

That's what I was thinking when I was reading the original post.

Okay I guess I'm not the only one. Had two guys in the last two nights. One from ADT the other from City Wide or something like that. Both seemed greasy.

I had some guy from Honeywell trying to sell me an alarm a couple months ago claiming some of my neighbours signed up (he mentioned them by full names), I was like...don't you guys make humidifiers and thermostats!? lol I told him to go bother someone else nicely after that.

And what part is the scam? Do they provide a product?

I've heard too that they just need to get you to open the door. They can check very quickly if there is a security system by a bing when the door opens, or the plastic tabs on the door and the door frame. If they don't see any, then consider yourself cased.

That is unless they are legitimate door to door salesmen just selling crap. Luckily I have a dog that'll rip junk off a man in seconds flat when they ring the door, hopefully that helps us out.

I haven't gotten anyone coming to the door to sell security yet, just to sell direct energy "contracts" and trying to see my bill, except I won't let them see anything... and to get back on track.... I get security telemarketers calling my house probably 4-5 times a week, extremely frustrating.

Aren't home security alarms completely useless for any crook that has any idea of what they're doing though? They'll be in, out and down the block with your stereo, laptop and wife's jewelry before your alarm company even notifies the cops... let alone sends someone to do something about it.

It's not a 'scam' that they don't provide a product, but it's HIGH pressure sales. My wife and I had the misfortune of listening to this guy's spiel once. Some how used a Jedi mind trick to get me to open the door, then next thing I know we're sitting at my kitchen table...

Was using a "Today's price only". I balked. Told him I needed some time to think. I didn't sign anything, I didn't agree to anything. Not only did he call me like 4 times that night to get me signed up, but he also told our neighbours that we signed up as well.

Needless to say, we did not sign up. The kid was good, and by good, I mean disturbingly pressuring and annoying, and sounds like he lied to get sales, a true 'salesman'. I'm sure there's an alarm system that goes in, as I saw a bunch of signs go up around the block a few days later.

I've also heard horrible things about their billing to Canada. I think the company was called Alliance.

I have almost the same story. Guy came to my door in the summer, made a really good pitch and was very good at his job. Problem was everything was free until the last 5 minutes of his spiel when he started talking about monthly costs of $50+. I shut him down pretty quick after that, but unfortunately I was dumb enough to give him my phone number. I assume i gave him my phone number because last week we started getting calls from his company.

"we know you met with one of our representatives and we want to offer you a different introductory offer" yadda yadda yadda. They probably called 4 times, they were rude to my wife and they hung up on me when I told them i wasn't interested. Wish I could remember the name of the company so I could flame them, but I don't recall.

Absolutely true ..... the alarm system is to make them think about going to your neighbors who doesn't have one and to prevent them from hanging around inside your house all day getting more of your stuff. Nothing is going to stop a smash and grab ... for me, the alarm is about minimizing their time in your house. Also, the monitored smoke alarm is just as important as the burglar alarm.

I think I got this too. Everything was free, and he wasn't sure on the monthly costs. Plus, I had just started a new job, which I had to start at Part Time hours, and reduced income, so I had to make sure it fit our budget. Guy kept trying to get me to say yes, but I did not feel comfortable at all.
