Tough call. Those dogs are police officers and you MUST have them extremely well trained and obedient at ALL times. Thats a puppy with a rather short attention span. Given the end result of hopefully a licensed police dog I say its ok...for any other type of dog (service, pet, etc) that is way too harsh.

Whoa, that' a tough call!! I'm fine with everything except for the whimpering. But you do hear of police treating their dogs like gold, and they do need to be trained. Watching the dog, he was never hurt, never cowered and always had a strong physical presence. All of that indicates that the dog is participating on his own. I've pinned my dog like that before and it generally kicks the snot out of me, but it's all in good fun.
I've talked to a police officer in town that said many dogs spend 24-7 outside in pens to get them used to all weather. They never ever spend a day indoors. This is because they need to be able to spend days on end on a steak out and need to be used to harsh weather. That doesn't seem so nice either, but then again, they are animals and without humans would live in the wild anyhow.

Not the one...

Looked fine to me. He clearly wasn't trying to injure Fido.
Dogs aren't nearly as fragile as we usually treat them and I believe that training police dogs may require that kind of force.

Is that POLICE DOG training, or police DOG TRAINING? Is it to train Police dogs, or to train police how to handle dogs... bizzare video. Also looks quite old, or at least old technology used.

What technology are you referring to? The video is bad quality, maybe taken from VHS or something... but I dont see any technology?

The dog is the old technology build similar to the ED-209. Today, we employ the much newer and stable OCP Crime Prevention Unit 001.

Um, anyone who thinks this is even remotely close to dog abuse should never own a large dog - I don't think they could handle one that might get out of hand.
Seriously, someone thinks this might be abuse?

That looks like me on my nightly walk with my dog.
My dogs attention is so focused sometimes and most of the time on the wrong thing, I could literally punch her (I would never) and it would barely break her focus.
Strong willed breeds require some strength applied by the handler as long as it is not based in anger.
However, there was a case recently where someone videotaped a police dog trainer training process where the trainer ummm....
gave the dog an HJ and recommended it as a tool to get the dog to bond with the trainer. I would provide a link but I am not putting that into Google at work...
It was found out by the department and the trainer was charged with animal abuse.

I was refering to the video quality. I haven't used a VCR in almost 10 years. Can't imagine this video was filmed yesterday. Maybe policies have changed in police dog training since then. That's all I was refering to.
Can't get too mad at Bruce for the Robocop reference.

It looked like in the first bit that it was training for the dog on what to do if the offender were to push the dog down. To be honest, its obviously a pretty untrained dog if its not biting already.

Seriously, I thought it looked possibly like abuse. And my capacity for learning isn't maxed, so I think I could learn what is acceptable and what isn't with regards to training a large Dog.

Nah not abuse. This is a police dog going through its training. Just like human recruits getting screamed at and having to go through rigourous training so do the dogs.
This is also how dogs behave in the wild. They fight for control of their pack. Since the officer handling them needs to be in control you have to take it.
Also I wrestle with my dog all the time (Rotty X Husky) and try and pin him down, and he just loves it and loves tackling me. They are pretty tough, you arent gonna break him by playing rough with him from time to time.
Too bad they never kept filming and showed the part where he got heaps of praises and affection plus a treat for his work.

Not even close to abuse... Did he ever strike the dog? He's just making sure the dog is not the alpha in the situation.. I agree with what Stang said, they left out the parts were when he is following the rules he gets praise..

Personally I think it's quite the opposite. If you were to toss around a large breed house dog like this you could easily trigger the dog to go into defense and bite and fight back. The dog in this video never once fought back, just didn't let himself be pinned. My dog and I play like this, as I mentioned, but I can't go all the way with him, or he'd skewer me, I respect his jaws and the fact that he doesn't know how strong he is at every given second (other dog owners know what I'm talking about). This dog never once bit or nipped, I'd say he's quite trained.

But police dogs aren't trained to be nice or polite...they're trained to (quite violently) control subjects when released by their handlers.
