Basically what are your favorite quotations...

Here is one from Dwighr Eisenhower to get the ball rolling

"An intellectual is a man who takes more words than necessary to tell more than he knows."

Well I hope this hasn't been done yet....

It has been said that democracy is the worst form of government except all the others that have been tried.

"Finish each day and be done with it. You have done what you could. Some blunders and absurdities no doubt crept in; forget them as soon as you can. Tomorrow is a new day; begin it well and serenely and with too high a spirit to be encumbered with your old nonsense." - Ralph Waldo Emerson

Pierre Elliot Trudeau

Americans should never underestimate the constant pressure on Canada which the mere presence of the United States has produced. We're different people from you and we're different people because of you. Living next to you is in some ways like sleeping with an elephant. No matter how friendly and even-tempered is the beast, if I can call it that, one is effected by every twitch and grunt.

We wish nothing more, but we will accept nothing less. Masters in our own house we must be, but our house is the whole of Canada.

Canada is a country whose main exports are hockey players and cold fronts. Our main imports are baseball players and acid rain.

Either we shall passively suffer our situation of economic domination, and then it would be better to be annexed outright to the United States, rather than be a colony exploited without limit. Or else we shall interfere vigorously in the game of economic forces .

Social profitability must take precedence over economic profitability: houses, schools and hospitals must come before factories and mills .

Here are a few of Mine.

An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind.
Mahatma Gandhi

"Imperfection is inherited, therefore we all sin, but fighting the war of sin is the greatest war of all because we all die in the end no matter how hard we fight."
Tupac

I believe that everything that you do bad comes back to you. So everything that I do that's bad, I'm going to suffer from it. But in my mind, I believe what I'm doing is right. So I feel like I'm going to heaven.
Tupac Shakur

It is better to be violent, if there is violence in our hearts, than to put on the cloak of nonviolence to cover impotence.
Mahatma Gandhi

In the end, we will remember not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends.
Martin Luther King Jr.

There are more pleasant things to do than beat up people.
Muhammad Ali

Power never takes a back step - only in the face of more power.
Malcolm X

Law is mind without reason.
Aristotle

The United States is a nation of laws: badly written and randomly enforced.
Frank Zappa

Usually when people are sad, they don't do anything. They just cry over their condition. But when they get angry, they bring about a change.

Noam Chomsky

"If we don't believe in freedom of expression for people we despise, we don't believe in it at all."

"Any dictator would admire the uniformity and obedience of the U.S. media."

"In this possibly terminal phase of human existence, democracy and freedom are more than just ideals to be valued - they may be essential to survival."

"Personally, I'm in favor of democracy, which means that the central institutions of society have to be under popular control. Now, under capitalism, we can't have democracy by definition. Capitalism is a system in which the central institutions of society are in principle under autocratic control."

"Predatory capitalism created a complex industrial system and an advanced technology; it permitted a considerable extension of democratic practice and fostered certain liberal values, but within limits that are now being pressed and must be overcome. It is not a fit system for the mid-twentieth century."

"Propaganda is to a democracy what the bludgeon is to a totalitarian state."

"The Bible is one of the most genocidal books in history."

"Unlimited economic growth has the marvelous quality of stilling discontent while maintaining privilege, a fact that has not gone unnoticed among liberal economists"

"Three quarters of the American population literally believe in religious miracles. The numbers who believe in the devil, in resurrection, in God doing this and that - it's astonishing. These numbers aren't duplicated anywhere else in the industrial world. You'd have to maybe go to mosques in Iran or do a poll among old ladies in Sicily to get numbers like this. Yet this is the American population."

Noam Chomsky 2

"As soon as questions of will or decision or reason or choice of action arise, human science is at a loss. "

"Censorship is never over for those who have experienced it. It is a brand on the imagination that affects the individual who has suffered it, forever."

"Either you repeat the same conventional doctrines everybody is saying, or else you say something true, and it will sound like it's from Neptune."

" I have often thought that if a rational Fascist dictatorship were to exist, then it would choose the American system. "

"If the Nuremberg laws were applied, then every post-war American president would have been hanged. "

"If we choose, we can live in a world of comforting illusion."

Creationists make it sound as though a 'theory' is something you dreamt up after being drunk all night -- Isaac Asimov

Ignorance more frequently begets confidence than does knowledge: it is those who know little, and not those who know much, who so positively assert that this or that problem will never be solved by science. -- Charles Darwin

you know, it's funny.

i used to see the odd clip from chomsky or an occasional quote and think, 'man what a left-wing-windbag.'

finally decided to buy one of his books, to make an informed opinion.

truth is he is a windbag, of sorts. he just doesn't shut up aboot things he made points for chapters (and maybe books) previous.

but he does talk a lot aboot perspective - and what things look like on the other side of america's gun justice.

yeah, he spews vitriol. yeah he selectively targets the media. yeah his slant is always going to be the same angle.

but his statements are quite well-researched and there is a nugget of truth in even the most ambitiously flamboyant of his rants.
