Default When did being sick mean work from home?

I remember when being sick meant stay home and rest up and get better, now it seems that it means just work your butt off from home.
Over the last two weeks we have had managers rushing into our office demanding that we rush people onto remote access so they can work from home because they are to sick to be at work. Whether it be setting up a Citrix account, building a laptop with a VPN on it, or building a laptop with the software they need to work locally on it.
Just let people stay home and get better, over working them when they are sick will only make it worse!

In the course of meeting deadlines, pushing through projects, dealing with customer situations, we've certainly lost our common sense in dealing with people.

Yeah, I get that work from home thing when I get sick which is rare. I remind them that I haven't taken a vacation longer then a day since I got here and if they think I'm working from home they're cracked.

Then I work from home.

My company isn't too bad, but I do find that there is a certain business culture to always be connected these days. I think we really are tied to our jobs more than ever.

Well if you go over your sick day allotment and you still want to be employed I am guess your company would tell you to work from home.

My dad contracts at an Agrifirm and they have people calling in sick when they arent sick because they are so afraid of pig flu. The company he is working for has no problem using your sick days but if you use them and you are over the limit you have to work from home else you dont get paid for that day.

People need to realize that the cure to this flu is to make your body a hostile breading ground.

Everyone should be required to drink a 26'er of rum and smoke a pack of cigarettes a day.

Its gotten to epic proportions in terms of the flu hysteria. I've seen a story about a day care getting shut down. The woman calling in to work saying she can't come in because of her day care being shut down due to H1N!, she's told to work from home and they disinfect her cubical.

Its the flu people, not the plague or polio.

The last freakin thing I would want to do if I'm sick at home is do some bloody work. No thanks, I'll spend they day lying in bed watching movies, drinking OJ and overall feel sorry for myself.

It's not often I get sick, I don't think I've used a sick day in my 7 yrs of being at this job. Any day I'm actually sick I'm not doing anything that could remotely be described as work.

Kinda sounds to me like the daycare worker(s) got the flu, so they had to shut down the daycare. Then the woman doesn't have alternate child-care arrangements, so she can't come into work.

Disinfecting her cubicle... yeah that may be a little over the top. But the first part of the story isn't really hysteria. Sounds like someone with kids who doesn't have readily available babysitters/in-laws available on short notice.

This is true, when my kid is sick, I wfh, and don't get charged any sick/holiday days.
When I'm sick, I also wfh, but really it is more or less just staying in touch, and not doing a whole ton of work.

Man, how fun would work be if we all had to drink a two six of rum and smoke a pack of cigarettes a day? That's the life right there!

I wonder how many of you complain about working from home when the gold medal game of the World Juniors or Olympic hockey takes place during a weekday?

I would kill to work at a job where I could work from home when I was sick.

I get 18 paid sick days a year, and I'll be damned if I use them when I'm actually sick and can't do anything.

I agree. When I'm actually sick, I come into work and show that I am a trooper. When I actually call in sick, I'm usually hungover or out running errands

And this is why there is a complete lack of trust between employer and emlpoyee.

I get paid to do a job. When I'm healthy to do it I'm going to be doing it because that's my end of the bargain.

I think the "trooper" stigma this flu season has changed. People WANT you to stay home if you're sick now. If you're in the office and sick, people are mad that you're there.
