Default GAME 17: STAMPEDERS at BC Lions

A very important game for both the Stampeders and the Lions. Calgary already clinched the playoff spot while BC Lions is still fighting for the last spot for Western Division playoff (Edmonton) and/or the crossover playoff spot or not even make the playoff if they lose both their remaining games and Edmonton win theirs. The Lions can still end up in 2nd place if they win their last two games. The Stamps on the other hand can clinch at least 2nd place if they beat the Lions then play Saskatchewan for 1st place. It is still a tight race. Casey Printer will be the Lions starting QB against the Stamps.

OFFENSE: QB Henry Burris finally had a good game throwing for over 300 yards (345 yards), the first time in 6 games. The important thing was he connected with WR Romby Bryant all night. Bryant caught the ball 9 times and gained 211 yards. That was the highest among CFL receivers in Week 18 therefore he won the Offensive Player of the Week award.

The always reliable Joffrey Reynolds ran for 2 TD and gained 75 yards in a game against the Eskimos. Reynolds is going for the CFL rushing leader in a second season in a row.

DEFENSE: Calgary defense had a great game against Ricky Ray and company. They held the Eskimos to fewer than 10 points and they did not allow a touchdown. It is a tough task to stop Ricky Ray for throwing a TD in one game. LBs Tim Johnson and Malik Jackson was a big factor in limiting the Eskimos offense to less than 100 yards in rushing. The Stamps defense were just plain awesome especially in the 2nd half against the Eskimos.

SPECIAL TEAM: P Burke Dales continues to play well in special team. His directional punting is improving every game. Coverage team played a lot better against the explosive Tristan Jackson and Whitlock. Kickoff returner Demetrius Summers is getting better and better. The only suspect the Stamps have is the punt return. Markus Howell is useless and they need someone else to return the punt.

-------

Romby and Burris combo clicked against the Eskimos and I hope it continues. That should open up the other receivers syuch as Copeland who got shutdown last game. In fairness to Copeland, he was getting double-teamed or triple-teamed every game. Nik Lewis is always there when Burris needs the first down and Franklin is starting to get comfortable. R Brett Ralph was thought to have an injured hand and that is whaty one of the reasons he's been struggling catching the ball lately. Burris needs to distribute the ball to his receivers. He also need to use his legs more by running the ball. Reynolds needs to touch the ball early in the game and established the running game. With running game clicking, so as the passing game later on.

Defense needs to pressure Printers a lot and not let him use his legs running the ball. If the Stamps defense make Printers in the pocket all game, chances are they can stop him. Printers is not as good playing the pocket. They have to play Geroy Simon man-on-man and not give him some openings.

GO STAMPS GO!!

More updates before game time. Wow, which one to watch? The Flames vs Detroit Red Wings game or the Stamps-BC game? I believed both games start at the same time. Thank god for PVR! Happy Halloween!!

Looks like Durant is doing the Stamps a HUGE favour. I don't think I've seen a player single handedly lose his team the game like this before.

If the Riders somehow come back and win it will be in spite of Durant's first half play, not because of it.

He has fumbled 2 or 3 times and thrown a brutal, brutal pick. I have no idea why Jyles wasn't put in during the 2nd quarter.

ROSTER UPDATES:

CALGARY DL Tom Johnson is in, DL Juwan Simpson is out. Also, Stamps are saying Miguel Robede will be playing as well.
Injuries: DL Derek Armstrong(arm), Alain Kashama(ankle), LB Tristan Black(leg), Lemarcus Rowell(knee), DB JR Ruffin(knee), Brandon Smith(knee), FB Teyo Johnson(ankle), WR Ken-Yon Rambo(knee-out for season), Ryan Thelwell(achilles-out for season).

BC - LB Jason Arakgi, R Ryan Grice-ullen, DB Mike McEachern, OL Bobby Singh and RB Ian Smart are in; DB Trestin George, RB Martell Mailett, LB Scott McCuaig, DL Nautyn McKay-Loeschler and OL Angus Reid are out. Also, there is a possibility that afety Barron Miles will not suit up as well.
Injuries: FB Alexis Bwenge(ankle), DB Trestin George(knee),OL Jon Hameister-Ries(shoulder),QB Jarious Jackson(shoulder), RB Martell Mailette(foot), DL Nautyn McKay-Loescher(back), OL Angus Reid(foot).

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A lt of changes for the BC Lions starting lineup for this game due to injury. I would assume the Stamps will take advantage of all the changes. OL Dean Valli will take Angus Reid centre spot while rookie Justin Sorenson will take the left guard position. I can just see the Stamps DLine getting anxious on testing the BC Lions' OLine. I think this is their chances to pressure the QB a lot. RB AJ Harris will take Martell Mailette spot as the starting RB and will be back up by Canadian RB Lee and import Ian Smart. On defense, DB Trestin George will not play and safety Barron Miles might not be suiting up so here is a chance for Henry Burris to test safety Tad Crawford and DB LaVar Glover.
I hope to see RB Joffrey Reynolds just keep pounding a run against that not so-smart overrated MLB Jojuan Armour. I can see Joffrey gaining over 100 yards again this game like he always does against the Lions.

************************************************** ************
NOTABLE: Calgary won 6 games against the Lions in a meaningful game. They won 5 in the regular season and 1 in the post-season. This game is another meaningful game for both teams so I can see the pattern continuing. The Stamps ground game produced an average of 213.5 yards a game in the 2 games against BC this season.
Slotback Nik Lewis needs 79 yards in receiving to hit the 1,000 yards mark for 6 straight season. Only downside, there are only 2 games left and he still hasn't caught a TD pass. Could this be the game?

GO STAMPS GO!!

Wow, it only took 3 quarters of Durant sabotaging the Riders and Miller is finally going to put in Jyles. Brutal. Luckily this game only means something if the Riders lose next week.

Edit: Just checked out the possibilities.

The Stamps clinch a home playoff game with a win tonight. A win tonight AND a win next week gets them the bye.

Wrong. Tonight's game doesn't really matter at all as far as the West Final is concerned.

If BC wins out and Stamps lose out then the Stamps would finish 3rd and the Riders would finish first with BC finishing second.

The Stamps just have to win next week and they host the West Final.

BC can get a maximum of 20 pts. Calgary already has 19. Even if they lose tonight and win next week they will still have 21pts which is more than BC.

If Calgary loses tonight and wins next week they host the West final.

Sask can no longer lose next week. Had they won today the Riders could have lost by 2 or less next week but now that can't happen.

No matter what, if the Riders beat the Stamps next week they WILL host the West Final.

EDIT: How about this for a crazy ass scenario? Stamps lose to BC. BC wins out and finsishes with 20 pts. Calgary and Sask tie next week and both finish with 20 pts.

Calgary has the season series on BC but not Sask. Sask has the season series on Cgy but no BC. BC has it on Sask but not Calgary. That would be some crazy shiznat. Almost impossible but it could theoretically happen.

It appears BC would finish first if that happened because they would have the greatest number of wins, which is the first tiebreaker, before head to head.

Yup, but I still think I am correct in saying that if the Stamps win tonight they get a home playoff game no matter what. If they lose next week they would finish 2nd instead of 1st but would still get to play at home.

And check out this scenario that I saw posted on another site:

If both Cgy and Sask lose this week and then tie the final game, and provided BC runs the table, the Lions would win the west because they would have 10 wins (10-8, 20pts) versus the nine wins that us and Sask would have (9-7-2, 20pts). In that case it would be BC, then Riders, then Calgary.

Could you imagine, in that scenario, if the final game went to overtime and teams traded TDs in the first possession, and again in the second possession... if it was the Riders who scored the final TD, they would have the following decision to make:

Go for 2 and make it.......... finish 1st in the west
Kick the 1 point................ finish 2nd in the west
Go for 2 and don't make it.. finish 3rd in the west

What would you do in that situation?

FTR I already addressed the almost impossible tie situation in my post.

You are right. If the Stamps win tonight, regardless of next week, they get a home playoff game because no one else can get 21pts except the Riders, who in doing so would win the season series.

That is a crazy situation but I'd bet my first born it won't happen.

BTW Arlo, I didn't see you in my seats at the Oilers game on the 24th. You better not have scalped them. I swear to god I'll cancel all your tickets and refund you your money if you did. I'll just assume you sold them privately for face value or I was so drunk I didn't notice you in them. I'll be checking ebay, craigslist etc from now on...

BC is going to roll the Stamps, BC is a far superior team to Edm, and Stamps are going to be too high on themselves after whupping Edm last week.

Look for something like 43-15 BC.

As much as it pains me to say it I have to cheer for the Stamps. A victory by Calgary guarantees the Riders 2nd place or better.

I'm hoping for Burris to break both his legs on the last play of the game and the Stamps win.

BC needs to win both games in order to get the 1st or 2nd place. If BC lose the game tonight, the highest they can get is 3rd place. Since the Riders already lost, they sure hope the Stamps beat BC Lions then beat the Stamps. If the Stamps beat the Lions, they secure no lower than 2nd place. Then whoever wins in that Riders-Stamps game will win the first place. So, in other words Riders lost tonight doesn't mean anything to them unless they lose to the Stamps.

Looks like I PVRing the Flames game tonight and watch the Stamps game instead.
