Kentucky Fried Chicken won
Remember 15 years ago when Kentucky Fried Chicken changed their name to KFC? We all thought it was ridiculous. "Who do they think they're kidding, we all know what the 'F' stands for" we thought. Well, we were wrong. Last night during the absolute destruction of an eight piece family feast (plus popcorn chicken, chicken fries, large fires, large gravy, 3 sides salads (nuclear cole slaw ftw) and 2L of soda) my son asked me, "Dad, what does KFC stand for".
My feeling fluctuated between two extremes. I went between feeling like I have failed him as a father and how did we let KFC win. I quickly recovered my senses and turned it into an observational lesson. I felt better that he could figure out the C stood for chicken. ("What are we eating, son"?) Relieved when he realized F stood for fried - take that Colonel. ("And how did they cook the chicken, my boy"?). I gave him a pass for not knowing Kentucky. Who cares about Kentucky anyway?
The moral of the story is the evil marketers are winning. I fear for the next generation.

I thought the KFC branding was being phased out and they were bringing back the full name? That's the case in the US last I heard.

I never really though about why they changed their name. So that we'd forget that they serve fried food? I thought they were just acknowledging that everyone called it KFC anyway. Now I wonder: Did Bank of Montreal change their name so that we'd forget that they're Quebec based? Those evil french barstars!

Is the chicken actually crispy anymore? Last few times I went (years ago) the chicken wasn't crispy and the skin was just mushy. I hate driving all the way to Chicken on the Way for my chicken fix.

Not to derail the topic too much, but I'd assume the reason for the name change would be to make in roads into the United States.
HSBC
BMO
RBC
TD
Sounds better than using their foreign name
Hong Kong and Shanghi Bank of Commerce
Bank of Montreal
Royal Bank of Canada
Toronto Dominion
Just assuming.
As for KFC, I'm hungry

Yep, just like Royal Bank of Canada is now RBC, branding in the USA.

Ironically enough they are no longer Quebec based. Head office for BMO is now in Toronto. Maybe it makes sense to drop the references to a city that they no longer have their head office in.

i think they 'changed' the name for international appeal. KFC sounds so much cooler than Kentucky Fried Chicken. like you said, who knows Kentucky? i guess it also saves space on billboards and signs when they combine KFC with Taco Bell and Pizza Hut (same company).
oh, get this. the stock symbol for KFC/Taco Bell/Pizza Hut is YUM
Edit: pretty much what "MQS" said

I remember about five years ago, KFC had an ad campaign in the USA implying that KFC stood for "Kitchen Fresh Chicken". Yeah, right.

Where did that come from, 'cause I can remember my dad saying that to me when I was a kid also.
I think there was a thread on this already actually... let me look.

After crushing a meal like that, I'm surprised the question coming from your son wasn't more along these lines.. "Dad, is your life insurance paid up?"
