Blue Jays hire Paul Beeston as President & CEO.
Figured this deserved it's own thread, since it's somewhat news worthy.

I assume that Prime Time Sports will now have two hours devoted to this today and this is half of McCown's dream team for the Blue Jays.

Wasn't he already interim-CEO?
Anyways, I think this is a good move. He was in similar positions in the glory days, although I think the economics of today are different than back then.

I think Beeston will mainly focus on the business side of the Jays, which means a big focus on the Rogers Center, but it does help in the fact that if Andropolus (or whatever the name of the terrible GM they hired is) wants more money to waste then Beeston supporting it likely makes it happen.
Beeston has no eye/say in talent so the Jays don't get better in that respect with this hiring.

What exactly in the last month happened that made him a terrible GM?

Nothing different in the last month that didn't happen over the history of his career where he has done nothing.

What has he done poorly at in his former positions for you to feel this way?

All we need to do now is turn the salary clock back 20 years as well, and the Jays are all set!

Well it isn't like the Jays have been a powerhouse team since he has been involved with the team.
And I realize I left out the word choice before GM. I thought he was a terrible choice for GM since he hasn't done anything to earn the job.

Beeston has been hired as President and CEO, his role is to build a solid Organization (scouts, GM etc.....). In my view, Beeston hiring is a solid move for the Jays.
Beeston will help to set the "short term and Long term strategy" along with the GM.
If I had to guess the Jays will under go a "rebuild strategy".

I am going off what Beeston said which was that the new CEO will be a guy designed to grow the business and won't have much to do with the baseball decisions at all.

I think with the hiring of Anthopoulus that is the best way that they can go.
If you are going with the young GM coming from a scouting background probably better to have a team that "grows" with him.

I've disliked the Jay's organizational moves since Beeston took over.
Maybe its not fair to blame him, but he's on the top of the ladder.

I don't have an opinion on him one way or another. At least not yet.
But I probably won't form one for a couple years, what he does next year will be decided by people above him.
DJF put it thusly:
Quote:
One suspect remains at-large after a daring robbery and confidence scheme led Jays fans to suffer through a lost year of baseball.
The suspect, Paul Beeston, was hired at the beginning of last season on an interim basis as President of the Toronto Blue Jays. As part of his duties, Beeston was tasked with finding a full-time replacement. After dithering around the entire season, showing a reluctance to make any real decisions about the baseball club, including the future of its former general manager, J.P. Ricciardi, Beeston announced yesterday that he will be taking the job on a permanent basis.
The move essentially wastes the time of Blue Jays fans who followed the team through a mean-nothing season in which a mediocre record coupled with a complete lack of security for anyone in management to try to improve the team left fans more disillusioned than any other season of baseball in recent memory.
|
And they almost understate it. I think Beeston knew exactly what he was doing. He took over the job last year but didn't accept the responsibilities.
"I'm the acting president but I'm just a placeholder, I don't want to tie the hands of the next president by doing anything to improve this first place team halfway through the season. We'll lock the budget so JP can't make a move to upgrade ing Millar or Dellucci and if any players get annoyed at this cluster of an organization (Rolen) they're gone in a bad trade. Our manager hates this ridiculous situation and marches out Millar everyday as a giant middle finger at management that is condemning his last hurrah as manager to a PR gimmick. Finally, I'll formally accept the job and historical hindsight will either forgive me for failing after inheriting JPs mess or history will celebrate me as the guy that resurrected this pitiful franchise."
Ok, that rant got a little carried away and hyperbolic, but this franchise is a pitiful mess from the field to the concessions to showing the fans an ounce or respect (i.e., jerseygate).
I have no problem putting that on the shoulders of the president.

.....and with that rant I can finally forget about the Jays until pitchers and catchers report.
