I have had two bitches spayed in the past, and I was under the impression that it was more expensive for a spay. I think that we paid in the ballpark of $300 (maybe even a little less) for each spay, so I would have though a little snip snip of the junk would be a little cheaper.
Although they might not be any cheaper, Western Vet Specialists seem to be quite good with surgeries. My nearly-crippled dog had back surgery there and they were great. And the dog walked again too.
Our other bitch was spayed at the Tuscany Vet Clinic, and I can't complain about them either.

We just paid about 500... which is expensive, but we like the vet. Also had the blood work, teeth pulled, and pain meds etc, so that adds up. Think the spaying itself was about 300.
Shawnessy vet.
edit: ours was a spaying... not a neutering.

I think neutering is a couple hundred bucks.
You know if you adopt from the Humane Society or ARF or organizations like that, they'll do the spaying/neutering as part of the adoption fees, right? I think the adoption fees are like $250. I know adoption is not for everyone, but just thought I'd throw it out there.

I am not sure the cost of neutering but just thought I'd add to the Vet cost conversation.
I had to take my dog in for a cruciate repair procedure (torn ACL) last week. This cost me just under $1,200. He is doing fine but will be a while before he is jogging with me again.

That's nothing! Above-mentioned-almost-crippled dachshund cost us $4500 of money we didn't have at the time. But I'd do it all again, despite some friends and relatives suggesting the "Lassie solution". She's doing pretty good five years later.
When she's running around like an idiot I warn her that she's already used up her once-per-lifetime surgery card, and that she'll be sporting a shiny new wheelie cart if she hurts herself again. I wish I was kidding.
Of course, we didn't insure that dog... our second dog is insured, but knowing the way insurance works, when you're covered you'll never need to call upon it, but when you're not, something big will go wrong. Murphy's law.
PS - hopefully your dog's recovery goes well. It is so hard to see them out of commission like that.

Ours just got neutered on Friday, it came to 378.00 but that was for blood work, micro chip (which was 45.00) and the neutering.

I also agree this was very cheap we spent $3500 plus on our chocolate lab a couple of years back. The worst part of that whole surgery was the weeks of towel walking her and constant kenneling for months to ensure she healed properly. Hope he does well and comes back at 100% for you so the two of you can remain active together.
As for the neutering, we just paid almost $300 to have our new chocolate lab pup done in Okotoks but that included a couple of shots that were due at the same time.

It seems the cost is tied to the size of your dogs nuts. I was lucky, in that my dog is 3 pounds and could chase his tail in my cars glove box. He was about $200 after the procedure, pain killers and tax. This was at the vet on Canyon Meadows Dr and Elbow, which was far cheaper than our previous, usual vet in Shawnessy, who wanted $340 to do the same job.

Our dog was 400 for a spay including microchip. I always thought neuter was cheaper but I know someone that got charged double what I paid.

That's a viable option. Head over to UFA, get a bag full of rubber rings and the special pliers and have at 'er!

Shop around. Generally, spaying is more expensive as it's a much more complicated procedure.
Our local vet spayed our last dog for about $180, shots included. The service was really good. It has been a couple of years since then, though. We had her foot treated there for a burn last summer and that was a lot more - almost $300.

For all these "the service was really good" responses like what does that mean? Was the receptionist nice, did the doc talk slowly and compassionately? Like wtf does that matter? How could anyone not a doctor or not a vet actually meaningfully comment on the service?
What we need here is answers like "it cost 190.00, Sparky still can run and we didn't have to go back for a do-over." Or "it only took an hour and they had the game on the bigscreen in the waiting room."
Shopping around might not be a sure bet, most of the clinics in this town are owned by one or two big companies that dictate prices to the vets. To echo another poster, its called pet insurance...

Our dog was cript (one nut), the other one was there just never dropped. Was suppose to cost the cost of a neuter and half a spay. Ended up only costing $270, neuters are based on weight, our pup was 50lbs. Want a good vet check out the one on 16th ave (Trans Canada Vet Clinic) Be prepared to wait because he is always busy.

The further from the city the cheaper the cost. The cost was alot cheaper here in High River and I hear its even cheaper in nanton.
