Coyote? That' not scary.
I'm a little more worried about the cougar that's staring at me from the ad bar on top of this thread. He looks like he's up to something.

Obviously a very unusual situation for an adult to be attacked. Although inital reports said there were only two coyotes involved, other reports say there could have been as many as a dozen on the scene, which would make a little more sense.
We have seen throughout North America increasing incidences of coyotes trying to snatch away small children . . . . . but taking down an adult human is a significant escalation from the norm.
When I'm out walking the prairie or hinterlands with my dogs, my general rule of thumb is I'm not worried about two coyotes, I'll watch three of them more closely and if there are five or more together I'm going to assume I've going to have a problem and will exit the scene.
I've had many instances where a coyote or a couple of coyotes have tried to lure my dogs away from me. I know there are others nearby.
I've witnessed how a larger group of coyotes can work together . . . . from my hilltop aerie I saw a group of coyotes get into position, then one lured a farm dog into a chase that ended up in the middle of the group. Fortunately, just as I was heading down the hill with a bat and the missus was phoning the neighbour, some other farm dogs were there to help their friend out of trouble. But seeing how those coyotes formed a plan requiring teamwork - and executed it with forethought - was mighty awesome and sobering.
I photographed this guy below driving slowly down the Smith Dorrien Trail (I had just come out of a parking lot). One of my dogs had her head out the back window of the Durango. He saw her and deliberately altered his flight to come right at us, trotting down the middle of the road only a couple of yards from the vehicle, eyeing my dog closely and, I think, hoping for a chase. Given his deliberate demeanour, I assumed this guy has had some successful experience killing domesticated dogs at campgrounds.

That Coyote has a very sinister look! Something about the eyes and mouth ...
Ussually, when we see them, its from a distance. Most often out in a field while driving in the country. From that view, they look like a nice cudly puppy dog. This picture illustrates that isnt the case at all.

Like Cowperson says, Coyotes are crafty - we have seen one coyote approach a dog like he wants to play. Then, the dog is lured into an ambush by a pack of coyotes.

I had one come by my house in Mackenzie towne last year, he was standing at the end of our fence (we only have it on one side) my one dog was on his tie and the other was loose, thankfully only the one on the tie out saw it and I was out there watching as well and they both came back into the house. My youngest lab was about 4 or 5 months old at the time, as soon as they came in it ran off.

I've actually heard of this girl. She was getting to be pretty popular in her genre of music.
I remember in university, I was doing a project on biodiversity in the Coquitlam River Park. While doing a plant inventory, I walked into a very small clearing to take a break when I began to hear loud yelps and whining all around me. It was pretty darn scary because I relaized that I must have walked right into a den. Needless to say, I got out of there pretty fast.

They were saying on the radio this morning that this is the first known fatality of a person by a coyote in Nova Scotia, ever. Apparently coyotes are usually quite shy in that area. They suspect that they may have been sufferering from some kind of irritating disease like mange that may have caused them to become violent. Either way it's pretty tragic.

I've got a few hunting buddies who are farmers who have very similar stories. Only sometimes instead of dogs, it's calfs.
Oh, and in all cases, instead of a bat, it's a .22-250, and the coyotes rarely get away.
I'm actually pretty anti coyote hunting in general, but in those cases, I say have at 'er.

There's been quite a lot of cases of coyotes taking cats and small dogs in the area for the past few months, especially in the rural parts. I have a friend who lost two cats to coyotes, and a dog to a bear. I think I heard they've had to relocate 20-40 bears in the last little while around the city/city limits. The one that took my friend's dog just walked into the back yard at like 5pm and grabbed it, then lumbered back into the woods.
I say we exterminate them all

I can't even begin to imagine what it would feel like to be killed by an animal. It must have been excruciating and horrifying.

That's horrible, I can't imagine having to go through an attack like that.
I've hiked almost every trail in the Cape Breton Highlands, including the Skyline trail that she was on. For the record one of the most beautiful hikes you'll ever go on. If you ever see the standard photograph of the Cabot Trail, it's taken from the Skyline trail.

Wish it was a bright sunny day, and my photography skills were better 2 years ago but alas:
Wildlife isn't uncommon:
I honestly can't fathom something like that happening. Now with the close encounters with wildlife that I've had and had absolutely nothing close to a confrontational attack.
