Default Any Vets or people with animal info please help. (PICS ADDED)

`My dog today is having a kinda greenish yellow gunk come out of his tear duct today. Not alot like hes crying but over a couple of hours it builds up. Now at this point of the night the gunk doesn't seem to be coming back but more like hes crying and you can tell hes squinting. His white part of the eye is kinda red.

Any idea what it is? something that I need to get him to the vet first thing in the morning?

Please help me these two dogs are my babies and my only kids.

Thanks Ian

Eye infection maybe? Is there anything you can see in his eye that might be irritating it?

We go to Fish Creek 24-hour pet hospital. You could call them for advice and/or book an appointment for tomorrow.

I can't help- but also keep in mind there is also a 24 hour vet clinic by the old Costco South. Might be worth a call if not a road trip.

Gotta remember guys I'm in tuscaloosa alabama.

I'm thinking maybe he got a hair or something in his eye and its irritated. As of now I'm going to hold off until the morning to see how hes doing if its any worse I will rush him to a vet.

don't feed him anything else tonight but just give him water.

That's out of a total abundance of caution in case they have to do a quick surgery to remove a plug from a tear duct or something like that.

There are 14 vets online right now.

I also think I found a 24 vet in Tuscaloosa. Shaver Vet Hospital might be open?

My advice to call a 24-hour vet for advice still stands. I call my vet quite a lot and they don't seem to mind giving out free advice over the phone.

Take a cold wet cloth and gently wipe his eye. My dog gets buggered up eyes often, he has seasonal allergies. It should pass, if not, then they can take a look and see if there's anything bad there. Your dog will tell you how bad it is though.

I second this - dog eyes look awful when they are fighting an infection, but in most cases, it's going to pass. I would give it one day to clear up or substantially improve on its own.

Okay, So I should wait a day then take him to the vet?

they are still red and the tissue around the eye is swollen a bit but he doesn't seem in pain. He seems just as happy go lucky as normal but just looks like he had a party with cheech and Chong.

I'm going to try to take a picture for you gusy.

I'd go, but, I go to the vet with my pets a lot. After one pet died really suddenly I'm a bit edgy about symptoms so I usually go "just in case" (not that your dog is going to die of an eye infection. And it doesn't really look that bad IMO). Anywho, hope you get it worked out soon!

If he's eating and playing like normal, that's an excellent sign. Honest to goodness my dog has had eyes exactly like that, it's heartbreaking. Check his ears and paws to see if they are red at all, could be a sign of an allergy. If he's sneezing he may have a touch of a doggy cold.

Not sure if this makes sense, but if you put your thumb on the bottom lid and lightly press down you should be able to see the inside of the lid, if it's really red then he may have something in there or an infection. If it's not really red that's a good sign. The whites are deceiving because they can become bloodshot really easily.

Sounds like your worried, so you may as well take him in. Make sure he's got his shots against kennel cough and the like.

Did you try the cold wet cloth?

I'd say that since you're going to take him in for a check-up anyway, you might as well do at at the same time. It doesn't sound like anything urgent, but I'd try and book something in the next day or two and get everything checked at once. It will probably be cheaper to do it in one visit as well, rather than going once for the eyes and then again a little later for the check-up.

They might give you some gel drops or something like that, or they might just let it run its course.

I will chime in as an Optometrist. Eye infections are only really serious if the cornea is involved. check for a white spot on the cornea. If there is one it is likely a more serious micro-organism and will require antibiotics. A good way to check the cornea is to take a small flashlight or penlight and hold it parrallel to the front of the eye. this will illuminate the cornea and any white spot will jump out at you.

If it is just the white part of the eye involved... it will likely pass and you should just treat him with a warm cloth on eye and irrigation with some saline.

Yeah I'm not happy but feel better about it. Poor dog has been nothing but a happy guy and always there when you need him and just loves people and to see him in discomfort sucks.

Doctor said a couple of days he would be fine.
