The thanks and reply VS just the thanks or just the reply
Call this my Larry David CP moment.
What's with the thanks and reply? Why thank a post, then reply to it explaining the purpose behind the thanks, the reasoning for this pressing of the thanks button? Does that count as a double thanks? What's the purpose of this? If you're going to do that, why not just reply and say why it was such a good or bad post and forgo the whole thanks in the first place?
I think proper thanks etiquette needs to be laid down. The first being the faux pas of the thanks and reply. It's like the wearing socks with sandals of the message board world.

No offence, but Larry David is funny when he gets neurotic about random things in life.

Listen if you see anything you like about any of my posts just thank them. Let's not over think what the thanks button is for.
If my post is funny. Thank it.
If my post makes you lol. Thank it.
If my post gives you a little tickle. Thank it.
If my post is full of a-hole goodness. Thank it.
Of my post successfully contains the word "######bag" or "######baggery". Thank it.
If my post is offensive in a good way. Thank it.
If my post is free of spelling errors. Thank it.
If my post is too stupid for words. Thank it.
I live for thanks. Really. It's all I have.

I can easily edit that to include a rather hilarious jab at you and the blue and copper.

I was going to just say "This post was great. Thanks", and thank you, but that was too obvious.
Instead, I'll go with the complete non sequitur: Since you're supposed to be HPLovecraft, why didn't you thank my post in the Random Thoughts thread where I said - and I quote:
R'lyeh! R'lyeh! Ph'nglui mglw'nafh Cthulhu R'lyeh wgah'nagl fhtagn!
I think you're some kind of imposter and con man.

No see, the funny part was me saying thank you, but not actually thanking you. If I thank your post the message is lost.
Awww screw it. Comedy is dead.

I assure you, I would have thanked you if I had seen it. That thread moves too fast for me... That, and no one cares about my random thoughts, so I just make them into their own threads like this one. Haaaaa.
The thanks and reply of this thread is just too obvious to attempt. Except for flamestalker...

The real HPLovecraft was a crazy ass, racist, xenephobe, ahole. I hope you just enjoy his writing...
That has nothing to do with this thread. That was just a random thought.

Would you say that a thanks carries a different level of thanks than actually replying and thanking someone? Like a thanks is just a thanks, but a full on reply is more of a thank YOU?

No, I obviously created this user name because I'm a big fan of his personality traits. I've never even read a single word he's wrote, to be honest. The fact that he showed racial tendencies in things he supposedly wrote (I wouldn't know, having not read them) is all I needed to name myself after a person who is largely obscure to the general public.
Seriously. I mean, really. I take offense to him being called an a-hole, by the way.

I'm a stats whore. I have no idea how often my posts get quoted and / or agreed to. But I know exactly how many 'thanks' I've gotten. Therefore, I like the thanks button better.

Well, I suppose that makes sense, but I was SURE I'd get at least one thanks (from you) on that, and a bunch of other people going "What the hell is that, what does that have to do with people naming their kids 'Riley', what is jammies smoking, and why isn't he sharing whatever it is?"
Oh well, maybe one day the opportunity to re-use that joke will come again; a board member is sure to name their kid Ftagn or Nar La Hotep if I wait long enough.

Dude you should read some of his letters. They were published and are available in a book. I think they were letters. Pretty sure you can find them (legally) for free online.
The dude was a total d-bag. Hated jews, finnish people, french Canadians, blacks, italians, irish, rusians, poles, blacks, "mongrol races" etc etc etc.
Married a jew and divorced her after 6 months (wonder why). Lived with his mother all his life.
I could go on. He was not a nice man.
Much like Michael Jackson or Roman Polanski, I'm not one to necessarily hate someone's artistic work based on the fact I hate them as a person, so don't take it personally that I think the guy is, or at least should be if there was one, burning for all eternity in hell. It is no reflection on you as a poster.
L Ron Hubbard is responsible for molesting young boys and creating Scientology but that doesn't mean his books are complete crap or anything.

You are assuming I have no knowledge of the man I chose to use as my user name, why?
I also like Vogner.

I often 'thanks' because it's easier than rehashing a post I agree with, or is funny.
Sometimes, I laugh my ass off, and wish that there were varying degrees of thanks.
I.E.;
-"Holy crap, Netminder, that was a thanks in the 1st degree, ha!"
-"Nice, photoshop, HD, 2nd degree thanks for you HAHA!"
-"LOLOLO *gasp* LOL, I'm crying, and spit my drink on my keyboard, ThePrez, thanks in the third degree for you!!"
