Default Vancouver Olympic medals unveiled

http://www.ctvolympics.ca/news-centr...tml?cid=rsstsn

I have to admit I hate the wavey design, but like the etching. Maybe I'll grow on it.

Quote:
The killer whale and raven motifs featured on the 2010 Olympic medals are rooted in ancient aboriginal art, but the design concept - laser-etching the images onto big, undulating discs - is so demanding of modern technology it pushed an engineering team to the limit.
As the gold, silver and bronze medals were unveiled in the Olympic Village on Thursday, Renato Romozzi, design co-ordinator for corporate engineering at the Royal Canadian Mint, stood in the applauding crowd and felt like crying. For him, it was the triumphant end of a journey that from the outset had seemed impossible.

It'll look great around Iginla's neck, and hidden under Loungo's grease ball.

They look delicious. Like they should come in a cardboard tube covered in salt.

I like em.

Yeah, I have nothing against showing some love to the aboriginals but c'mon really? First the mascots, the team Canada jerseys and now this.

As if the world didn't already think we're a bunch of eskimos we have to go and make sure that every single thing we do is somehow a testament and honor to aboriginals.

I'm actually kind of insulted that for all the hard work other Canadians have put into this country in the last 200 years that the only ones getting any props are the aboriginals.

Again, I have no problem with one of those things, especially the mascots, honoring our aboriginal people but if you were from another country (which surprise it is the Olympics and pretty much everyone will be) you'd think there are only aboriginal people here and somehow we are all descendants from them.

I was referring to the ones from Turin.

But the Vancouver ones? Yes, I've got the fever for the flavour of a medal.

You would think that based on what we've seen so far. It pisses me off. Show something to embrace the multi culturalism in our city. Let's see some mountains, or the ocean, or something beside aboriginal art. The Canadian hockey jersey has it, the symbol for the Olympics is a native thing, christ, even the mascots are of native decent. It's a bit much.

Frankly, it's ridiculous. I'm gonna hate the opening ceremonies. There will be a lot of drums and dancing. It's an awful thing to say, but it's the truth.

The "First Nations" people should be the one' getting the props!!!!

Every one of these other Canadians that you would like to give credit to all immigrated from a different culture. Of course we aren't descendants of the "First Nations" people (I believe aboriginal is a derrogatory (sp) term) we are descendants of Scottish, Irish, English, Indian, African, Welsh, Chinese, Japanese etc. etc etc.

How would it be possible to acknowledge each of the 100 or so different "cultures" that make up or nation.

I am as proud a canadian as anyone but your comment has a touch of ignorance and small mindedness. Everyone likes to pile on the First Nations people as having no contribution to our "Canadian" culture, when in fact over the past 200 years we have done our best to impose our different cultures on the real indigenous people while stifling theirs.

The silver medal looks just like Stephen Harper's hair! Doesn't anyone else see this? How can the conservatives be so blatant in insinuating themselves into these games?

I knew some bleeding heart wouldn't be able to resist. Who ever said aboriginals didn't contribute to Canadian culture. Do you even know why our country is called CANADA?

First off the term aboriginal is about as offensive as disabled is to a handicapped person. So about zero.

Second, I never said they have no contribution to our culture. In fact your post makes you seem small minded and like you are a politician who could give two s***s about aboriginal people and you are just pandering to the PC crowd who think it is fashionable to pretend you care about Canada's indigenous peoples.

And effing eh there should be something in this Olympics that recognizes the fact that we are one of the most multicultural nations on earth. All those nationalities you've listed are no more or no less deserving to be honored than the aboriginals and the fact that the Olympic Committee (or whoever is in charge of all that stuff) ignored us is equally insulting as if they completely ignored the aboriginals when coming up with the designs for the 2010 Olympic games. It isn't about honoring each individual nationality, it is about recognizing that we are the greatest damn nation on earth and one who is respectful of our heritage. The symbols of the games should honor the fact that Canada, and in particular Vancouver, are great places, very multicultural and that we have a lot to offer the world.

Remember, CANADA is hosting these games, not aboriginals. Aboriginals of course make up a part of Canada but the big problem with the jerseys, medals and mascots is that they ignore Canada in favor of aboriginals.

Personally I find your comment hypocritical, lame ass PC oriented, small minded, ignorant, totally un-heart felt and completely out to lunch.

If you want to pay lip service to the aboriginals, as you are doing, there are better ways than pretending that our country has treated them well (or that they have treated themselves well) in the last 200 years.

On that note, I can almost guarantee you that much of this so called "honoring" the aboriginals is in response to the fact that Canada has taken some serious international heat for our treatment of aboriginal people in the last 50-100 years (Oka Crisis anyone?) and this is our BS facade to make the world think everything here at home is honky dory and that us and the natives are all friends.

BTW, if you aren't an aboriginal your post seems totally artificial and disingenuous. If you are an aboriginal, well, get over yourself, you don't deserve all the props. Regardless of how you or I feel about the treatment of aboriginals over the last 500 years (a topic for another thread) in NA it doesn't change the fact that Canada is a great multicultural nation.
