Visa Debit
I've heard that it's available in Canada now. I like online shopping, but hate using my credit card, so this looks like a great alternative. Does anyone know how you go about getting one setup, or which banks offer it? I've searched all over the web, and all I can't seem to find anything. All I can find is info from the Visa site about business offering it to customers: http://www.visa.ca/en/merchant/produ...ebit/index.jsp

I just called RBC (my bank) and they have no clue about it being available. I'm guessing they either don't know, or can't say anything until it's officially launched. Oh well....guess I'll have to wait a bit longer.

Visa debit is for americans since Interac isnt available there. If you want protection for internet purchasing link your bank account to Paypal.

There are currently no debit cards in Canada? That's crazy. I couldn't live without mine.

Credit Unions offer Global Payment Mastercards, which operate as a Mastercard, however pull directly from your chequing account.

No, no, no. Everyone has a debit card in Canada. We use it for either withdrawing cash at ABM's, accessing our accounts at teller's, or making debit purchases at store. The later is done through the Interac system. The Canadian banking system is probably among the best in the world. I could be wrong here, but many American banks don't have mobile banking. Most CDN banks at least have that. As for the OP's question about Visa debit, I honestly have not heard a thing about it over here.

we use the same card that we use to deposit/withdraw money from the bank to make instant cash purchases at stores. nearly every major retailer in the country will have one of those PIN machines, so you can buy stuff without using a credit card or cash

Not to throw out another fact, but Canada is by far the biggest user of Debit cards in the world. I think if memory serves correct that Canada uses debit 3 times as much as the next biggest country. That is pretty crazy to me at least.

And it's stats like these that really makes me wonder what the point of having a credit card is these days. Only real function I can see is for deposits on rentals. Everything else can be bought with debit. I believe you can link paypal to a bank account for internet purchases so there not really needed there either. Only reason I use my CC for purchasing electronics is to extend the warranty past the original manufacturers one.

Personally, I don't use my debit card at all anymore. I use my credit card or straight cash for every single purchase. This is the understatement of the year, but people do use credit cards because they don't have the money in their accounts though. Others such as myself use credit cards because of the rewards associated with them. I'm proud to say I've never carried a balance ever in my short life, and with rewards being what they are these days for using the credit card, it's totally worth it. The funny thing is though, working for a bank you occasionally hear some really odd things that people do, "I like the cashback portion of the credit card", but they carry a $10K balance at 19% and the cashback is 1% or 2%, but they can get a line of credit and save 10%. And we wonder who subscribes to African e-mail investment opportunities.

I generally use my debit card, but I do have a credit card for the odd purchase. Basically I'm just using it to build my credit rating.

I want an iPhone app where I can sweep my phone past a pay terminal like my debit card and have the money come out of my account. In fact, I'd like an iPhone drivers license app and anything else that would make it possible for me to go out with out my purse.

From what I understand, the Visa debit is just like the debit card you have now, but stamped with the Visa logo. So basically you can use it "where ever Visa is accepted." ie: online purchases, regular purchases, etc, etc. Money is taken from which ever bank account you link it to.

Same, I have plenty of cash in the bank but I am 19 so I purchase almost everything with my credit card to build up my rating. It may not build it up like a mortgage, etc. will, but it helps. They bumped me up from $500 to $1500 without question, hopefully I can get it bumped next year too.

debit cards are doing this now too. earning Scene points with every purchase i make with the Scotiabank card is nice, it's already gotten me quite a few free movies. i also like their round up feature, i end up putting money in the savings accounts without really noticing it. builds up quite a bit over time

HSBC (UK) recently went from a Maestro debit card to a Visa Debt card, complete with chip and pin. It is a basic debit card, but unlike some in North America, you can use them for online purchases, etc.
Not sure if HSBC Canada offers it, but have a look.

You can use Cdn debit cards in the states. Each store's machine is different however, so not all stores work.
I use my credit card for everything now.
I get 1% cash back on the credit cards, not much, but better than 0% with debit.
I also get what little interest my money is making while it remains in my savings account for the extra ~30 days.
The only time I use my debit card is when I'm taking out money to go to the bars. If I can run a tab at a bar without giving my credit card over first, I will do that.
There is essentially no security in debit cards.
3 months ago I had my debit card stolen ~$1000 withdrawn, and I am still fighting to see a cent of that back.

I use my credit card for everything, if I can take the time to put in my PIN and do the debit thing, I can put it on my credit card. Two main reasons why:
1. I pay off the full balance every month so I collect the rewards from my card and get a little extra benefit
2. Added security (if someone skims it, I'm more protected)
