Default Bargaining with Shaw

So I currently am with Shaw and pay about $135/month for HDTV/basic phone/”Extreme” internet. I have a PVR too.

Telus calls me and offers me basically the same thing, will give me a PVR, and another HD box for the bedroom TV, and additionally offers all movie channels, HBO, time shifting and super channel. That add on with Shaw would run me another $50/month and while it would be nice, I don’t think it’s worth $600/year.

Anyone here work at Shaw that knows if they will match Telus? I have never had a problem with Shaw’s service before, however with what Telus is offering, it’s hard not to just switch.

Thoughts?

What does Telus use for a pvr? or more importantly, can you offload from it to an external hdd?

I am currently considering the same thing. the way I think of it is that I owe Shaw nothing. I am going to present the other offer to them, if they can match it, awesome! If they can't, I have no problem switching providers.

The only thing to do is make sure with Telus (or whoever) that this offer doesn't require a 3 year contract. Some people would rather pay the extra with Shaw to not have to be on a contract.

If it is Telus TV...don't take it. Telus TV is sh*te. I believe Telus sells Expressvu from Bell as well. If it is ExpressVu take it.

Didn't someone on here mention that the Telus pvr is only a single tuner? That is worse than a VCR!

It's a dual tuner with it disabled, but, there is a trick anyone can use to make use of the dual tuner function.

My girlfriend used to work for Shaw's "Saves" department. They'll basically give you some spiel about how Shaw doesn't price-match because their product is superior (LOL), but if you persist a little bit they'll probably offer you a PVR rental for free and a couple months of HBO for free.

guaranteed Telus will make you sign a contract to get those prices, and keep in mind that if anything breaks or you have a signal quality issue with your services, they charge for sending a tech out to fix it while Shaw doesn't. also you won't get near the same speeds for internet with Telus, which if you're already paying for Extreme through Shaw might be important to you

I just switched the other way (had Telus TV, went to Shaw). Basically Shaw offered me a free HD PVR and siginificantly discounted rates for tv and internet about 6 months. After that it'll be a lot more expensive than my Telus TV, but Shaw is way better, and i'm not in a contract, so if i want to cancel, I can without charge.

Telus will give you dirt cheap rates but the service overall just isn't as good. And you will be locked into a contract for at least 1 year, so if you dont like it, you're stuck.

I actually would saythat Shaw DOES offer a better product then Telus does. Internet, TV, and Customer service from Shaw all destroy products that Telus has.

Honestly, If Telus offered to charge me $50.00 dollars less (per Month) than Shaw, On contract, I'd tell them to pound sand!

There is something very wrong with the upper echelon that run Telus.

It sickens me to see the 1/16" thick, Glossy, Card-stock they pump into my mail box on a weekly basis! And on the odd occasion that I buy a newspaper....theres the "full page" Telus ad with some cute little gecko or parrot on it. Then there's the 58 "catchy tuned" commercials that I see during each Flames game!

Do they really need to spend that much on advertising? Telus is always in my face! I can't seem to avoid Telus!!!...They're everywhere I look!

-----------------------------------------------------------------------
There should never be another Telus (Employee) strike!.....and if they stopped those glossy postcard style flyers in the mail, they could lower the 15 remaining pay phones to 10 cents per local call!

Oh Yeah!!

I've had Shaw (phone, Internet, TV) for about 5-6 years now, On the rare occasion that the service was faulty, Every single time it was fixed with a phone call. Not once did they have to come to my house.

advertising is the only strength they have, they can't compete in product quality or customer service. of course Shaw's ads aren't much better, but at least i don't have to sit through them during every commercial break of a hockey game i'm trying to watch

i think forcing a person sit through those "cute" animal commercials for 12 hours straight would turn even the most devoted PETA member into a hardcore carnivore with no regard for animals other than how they taste

Is it not true that Telus simply doesn't have the bandwidth to compete with Shaw?

I got a PVR for $250 and a few other things thrown in last year. Call and say you are going to cancel, its not like you cant sign up for the same thing a few days after you cancel.

That is currently correct.

Once they roll out their verson of FIOS, then Shaw will be SOL at least with Internet speeds.

Shaw vs TELUS, in my opinion, is a question of what you need from the internet. If 6.0 or 3.0 high speed is enough for you (you just surf the web, watch youtube etc), then save the cash and go TELUS. If you download lots tho, then Shaw is good for you (I have it myself).

Realistically speaking though, the money the average person can save with TELUS makes it worthwhile. I can hook someone up with full internet, tv, and phone for well under 100 dollars a month, Shaw cant touch that

Since they can't even manage to keep bandwidth up on internet connections to offer their turbo service for customers that have Telus TV, I won't be holding my breath on them running fiber to my house for me to sign a 3 year contract.
