Dust storm in Australia
Quote:
A huge outback dust storm - 500 km (310 mi) wide by 1,000 km (620 mi) long - swept across eastern Australia and blanketed Sydney on Wednesday, September 23rd, disrupting flights and ground transportation and forcing people indoors for shelter from the hazardous air, gale-force winds, and in some places hailstorms. Those few who ventured outside, especially at dawn, were greeted by a Martian sky, familiar landmarks blotted out by the heavy red dust blowing by. Collected here are a few photos of the worst dust storm Sydney has seen in 70 years, three of which you can click to see a before/after fade effect. (26 photos total)

The Luna Park shot looks like something out of a new Batman movie.

Wow, that's incredible. Although I think this has far more meaning to people who have actually been there and know what it is like normally.

that's crazy.
I bet it's making for some wicked parties at some backpacker bars though...

That's a minor fata that's tough to spot but keep at it in this thread

I had thoughts of this storm when driving around in Calgary this evening as there was a reddish dust and smoke blowing everywhere and I could smell and taste it.

Amazing shots... its soo surreal seeing the images especially since I was there just a couple of months ago. I guess it explains the facebook status of my brother who lives in Sydney. " woke up to red skies"

It was pretty crazy yesterday in Brisbane. I couldn't see my neighbour's house, though I live on an acreage, so it's probably 150 or 200m away.
It was all cleared up this morning, however I'm in Cairns today, and the remnants are still blocking direct sunlight. Hopefully it's cleared up for diving tomorrow.
I'll post some pics in this thread later on once I'm back home in Brissy. Aussie correspondent out.

It looks so fun, I wish I hadn't missed it. The photos from my friend from our old rooftop in the Rocks are amazing! Pretty much all the photos in that link were taken a couple hundred metres from my old place.

all the family back home were going on about this dust storm. my sister works in the downtown and gets the train into the city centre and said it was eerie looking out the windows. everything got coated w/ orange dust. I was also told that now our family's black and white cat is black and orange

I was clicking on #9 hoping that the scarf would fade away. No such luck.. Great pictures otherwise.

Here's a couple of pictures of downtown Brisbane from Wednesday - no photoshopping, it actually looked sepia out there. My sister took them.
