Default OMG! Alberta Payphones rise to $.50 a call!!!!

Do they even have these things around anymore? I can't remember the last time i saw a payphone booth anywhere other than the airport. Or maybe you just don't notice when you have a cell.

http://www.calgaryherald.com/technol...388/story.html

Gerritsen said fewer people are using pay phones. The number of pay phones operated by Telus is also dwindling: in 1999, there were almost 38,000 in British Columbia and Alberta. Now, there's about 20,000.

Not a big deal. Can't remember the last time I had to use one. Maybe in an emergency, like if my mobile dies, but even then so many other people have phones.

I never trust anyone using a payphone, especially at 7-11's. They always look so shifty, and up to no good.

Yes. I hear you can also poo. Shall we turn this into a poo thread?!

I honestly wonder if pay-phones are even profitable anymore. First, you need to set up the damn thing and pay for the actual phone. Then you get some poor sucker who doesn't have a phone on him plop in 50 cents into a vandalized phone. Now you have to pay some person minimum wage to go around and collect the money.

I guess they do generate profits or they wouldn't have them...

Think of it as a tax on drugs. The company gets the money, though. It would be better if this was something the government got.

I don't think I've used a payphone since.... 1996? Maybe sometime inbetween '96 and '02 when I finally got a cel-phone. No wonder they're upping the price, need to bring in some sort of revenue for keeping them things running.

The alleged homless guys (aka crack dealers) that walk between the stopped cars on 14th street and 11th ave with there signs asking for money. I'm assuming they are calling for a pizza to be delivered or something.

What's weird, is that I don't even know any of my friends' phone numbers. They're all in my contacts and I just touch their name. Off the top of my head I probably only know my folks number and my office number.
