Don't let the fact that the "Missile Defense" proposed by Bush for Europe was intended to protect Europe from missiles launched by rogue states (such as Iran), not from Russia.

But then its not like you to let facts get in the way of a good rant - especially if you can bash Obama over it.

I think this could go either way.

On the one hand, Russia recognizes this decision and now the ball is in their court to react accordingly with a similar gesture to improve American-Russian relations.

On the other hands, lord knows we can't rely on NATO or the EU to build Missile Defense systems; that would take millions of miles of red tape and pandering.

This one could go either way.

Or Russian can take advantage of it. I like Putin he's my kind of diabolical evel genius.

I've always been fairly negative on the missile defense concept because firepower always always stays ahead of armour. Offense always progresses before defense, so while a missile defense system might work well against old technology delivery systems is small numbers, it probably wouldn't work well against hundreds of todays more advanced ballistic missiles.

I'm all for putting a missile offense system in place myself. Enough missiles to shower every man woman and child with a generous multi tonnage delivery.

The Shield's purpose was against "Rogue States" that would maybe be able to launch a handful or missiles at the very most. There was no way it would be able to prevent a nuclear armed nation such as Russia or China from launching a first strike. This is especially the case when those 2 countries could counter the system by deploying very cheap decoys into their delivery systems to overwhelm the defence shield
