I've got a pile of used books, national geographics and some Records
Any ideas where to take these? Places that buy them, or after that would accept them, I'd feel bad just trashing everything.
Thanks

Magazines are impossible to get rid of. Maybe you could phone the elementary schools in your area and see if they want them for the kids to cut up but that's about it. Recycle them though, don't throw them in the garbage if you can't get rid of them.
The books, if they aren't hardcovers of famous books in good condition, classics, or bestsellers from the last 2 years, have to go to the Sally Ann or Goodwill or some charity. You won't get anyone to buy boxes of old paperbacks or that kind of thing, but the charities will take them off your hands. Sally Anne will even pick up, for free, if you have lots of them. They will not take magazines though.
Are the records any good? Good condition? You might be able to unload a few of them at a record store. Recordland is in the white pages.
E-Bay maybe, but how much would it cost to ship 50 pounds of magazines that sell for 10 cents each?

Yeah, there is deifnitely a market for back issues of magazines on E-Bay, although I don't know about NG. Records are a different story. If you have some treasures in there (jazz, blues, R & B, etc.) try to gauge their value on the web. Again, E-Bay isn't a bad option. But if it's Phil Collins and Devo and Boney M, they're probably not worth much. Recordland in Inglewood (I think? Been a while since I've been there) might take some of them.
Books, it's hit and miss with second hand shops, and you won't get a ton of value. Maybe you put together a short list and send it out to people who request it here on CP (if that's allowed)? I am always in the market for decent second-hand books.

More useless junk discovered as we're packing to move.
Old fax machine (old skool thermal paper), 2 older stereos in varying conditions of working, old cord and cordless phone (both work).
Branded beer golf shirts and tshirts (Keith's among other Labatt products) Most of stuff never worn (sold some on ebay, lazy to put it all on)
Before I figure out proper disposal methods in the next week or so, any CP'er want to pick up some junk (all of the above, free of charge) up?

That place takes all sorts of old electronic stuff. Definitely the phones and fax machines. I do believe I dropped off an old stereo there as well and I know they took old speakers. Old wire as well.
It's free (except for VCRs). Up by they airport

Used book stores in Kensington might pick up those National Geographics if they're older. I scope out the stores periodically and got one as old as 1929 once. Modern Geographics - 1970 and newer - probably don't have the same value, at least not to me.
I've got two original"Hillary Climbs Everest" Geo's from the 1950s.
Don't know about the market for other books but if you have some of those Time Life book series there is interest in that kind of thing if the series is intact.
I've got more than 1000 books I'm sure in my house but I'll die and let someone else worry about it. I agree with giving them to hospitals, senior lodges, schools, whatever . . . . anything but the burn bin.

If you can't find anyplace else to take the magazines, I would definitely look into donating them to a school. Maybe one of the higher needs schools (St. Angela's, and there are others as well) might be able to take them off your hands.

I went to High School with, and still keep in touch with all the guys at the Kensington Wee Book Inn. I can let the manager know a "friend of mine" will be coming in with a bunch of magazines that are pretty rare, as well as with some books and records. They'll take it if they don't have it, and I've been in there numerous times - they probably don't have it. The manager doesn't care what comes in - trust me, I know 'cause I go drinking with the guy quite often!

The recycling facility in Airdrie has a 'take it or leave it' area for things like books and magazines. I'm not sure about any such place in Calgary, but I'd be willing to bet it does.
You should try donating the NG's to the Rockyview hospital. When I was in there last November suffering from a gall bladder attack, the only thing the nurse could find was a petroleum engineering magazine. I swear that that bloody mag bored my pain away. I'm sure future patients there would be happy not to have to read that...

Don't lump Phil in with the other 80's crap. Not many people have had as much staying power as ol' Phil Collins.

Wow thanks everyone, some great Suggestions.
I'll list some of the years of the National Geographics, just incase anyone wants them, as well as the records, ie peter12..
The books, yeah I'll try the above mentioned stores, then a school or two, I just felt bad dumping them..
Thanks again.

An Idi Amin record? I'd love to hear a little more about that.
If you can't dump your records on a CPer then definitely take them to a record store and you'll get money for some of them I'm sure. Esp. Thelonious Monk and Leadbelly and a few others.
