H1N1. 32% of the population will be affected by this?!
Is this going to be that serious? holy crap. I've never gotten the flu shot before but should I get one? I don't want to make my 18 month old sick.
http://www.calgaryherald.com/health/...399/story.html
Human H1N1 flu will begin spreading substantially any day now, peak in mid- to late-October and infect 32 per cent of the population, according to a new study on the potential impact of the anticipated fall wave of the disease
Their projections are an ominous warning for Canada.
The current plan calls for vaccinations to start in early-November — one month after the anticipated peak. The researchers say H1N1 will mostly likely follow the pattern of the Asian flu pandemic in 1957-58, rising in September and peaking in October.

Do you think 32% of the people get the flu at some point each year? I do.
There is nothing new here except the strain.

I don't think the regular flu shot will help you against H1N1.
But just because it's a pandemic doesn't mean it's a "serious" disease. From what I've read it's pretty much the regular old flu, but with a more potent impact, particularly when it comes to the lungs.
Very young, very old, and immunocompromised are the groups likely to experience severe effects. All the ordinary precautions you'd use to prevent ordinary flu should be used on this too.

I got the H1N1 this summer. And I am in the age demographic that it was supposed to be very serious to.
So i stayed at home for 12ish days, lots of sleep and liquids. Never infected any family or friends, just recovered quite fine.
I can't remember ever having the flu, but the H1N1 did not effect me much more than a cold would with a fever.
It's no strep throat or tonsillitis. people in the masses just like to get scared easily.

The group was healthy 16-25 year olds that were supposed to be effected the most.
And ordinary precautions is the best thing you can do.

I had that flu a few years back where it is 48 hours of vomit and 24 hours of crap. It sucked, there was times where it was literally coming out of both ends at once.
I thought that was the most sick anyone could get from a "common cold".. I have a feeling I will be proven wrong. I thought when I graduated University i'd be safe from all the germs.. but then I had to go and get a job on Campus..

400 to 800 people die of the flu every year in Canada.
Relax. Get the flu shot. Get the H1N1 Flu shot when it comes out. Repeat.

Did the 48 hrs and 24 hrs overlap? I had that happen once....it wasn't pretty.

Personally, I think Swine Flu paranoia is awesome.
I get a sore throat from time to time during the winter, but that is usually the closest I ever get to actually being sick. Thanks to paranoia, the second I start to get that sore throat, I'm taking a couple days off with pay.
