Aluminum Pop/Beer can Tabs
A few years ago, My daughter (Grade 4) asked me to start saving my tabs from my "Pop" ...cans. I did. Amazingly I had a 2 Litre Pop bottle filled!! in no time at all. Anyway, I gave it to her and she took it to School and that was that.
Well, I've been saving them ever since, thinking I'd get the same request. I never got asked again, and now I have almost 3 (2 Ltr. Bottles) and am wondering what to do with them.
Anybody know?

** I once heard that charities liked to collect the tabs because the aluminum was of a higher quality than the cans and that they melted them down to make "WheeChair" Rims.,,,,,,,Sounds like an Urban Legend/Myth to me.
......Maybe I'll just take them to the metal recycling place.

That is true charities collected them, i don't know if it was to melt them down or what but I remember saving them for my grandma who was big into charities. Check around, they might still do it.

I know someone who collects them for a charity (I believe something to do with diabetes, but I'm not 100% sure). If you can get them to me I can pass them on.

I was curious so I googled these:
http://www.snopes.com/business/redeem/pulltabs.asp
Basically just skimmed it -- it sounds like myth for all intents and purposes. However, I also found this:

I phoned the Calgary Ronald McDonald house. They do accept them. Put 'em in a bag or a box or something and deliver them -- push the buzzer and the receptionist will come and get them.

Why even pull them off for charity? The recycling depot won't accept the can without the tab, so you are left with a larger more useless peice of metal you can't do anything with.

Mine is stringent with the rules. They won't accept bottles with even the slightest chip, cans without tabs, or crushed cans. They claim that removing tabs devalues the worth of the can but they still have to pay the full amount. I thought it was pretty common? I ran into this in Lethbridge and Red Deer now.

Fun Pull Tab Facts
1 pull tab = 2.5cm
40 pull tabs = 1 meter
40,000 pull tabs = 1 km
approximately 3990 pull tabs = 1 kg
approximately 3,990,000 pull tabs = 1 metric ton
1 kg of pull tabs will provide anywhere from $1.00 to $1.32 (depending on market value)
http://www.rmhsouthernalberta.org/us...?FolderID=6910
So 4000 pull tabs = $1. Just take 10 cans in and give the dollar to the charity of your choice.

The bottle depot I go to accepts crushed cans, crushed bottled, cans with no tab, cases of beer with mixed brands as long as the glass color is the same, juice and soup tetra-packs... umm other stuff I'm sure too.

At a previous workplace, someone taped large envelopes to the pop machines for people to deposit their pull tabs into. These are the sort of envelopes that cost about $.25 to $.50 each. They would have had to have collected 2000 pull tabs to pay for the cost of the envelope. I think they collected maybe a dozen pull tabs before the company that owns the vending machines removed the envelopes. Really, some things are just not worth the effort.

I crush every can I use. They're way easier to store. No depot has ever refused to accept them.

you're getting screwed. I've been pulling the tabs of my beer/pop cans for about a decade and my bottle depot still accepts them.

Yup, pretty much. It is worth something to collect pop can tabs, but the amount is so little, it's not worth your time. Makes one wonder why anyone started collecting them in the first place.

Crushing them also prevents them from being used as shells for IED's
