Default Star Wars: The Old Republic

I hope this isn't a re-post. If so...sorry.

http://www.swtor.com/

This game is beginning to look SICK! The added "voice dialog" thing looks cool! Bioware has really put a lot into this.

Click on WATCH and enter your birth info...and enjoy! There are 4 parts.

I think Blizzard finally has some competition. I'm an avid and dedicated WoW player, but I am looking forward to this.

Cheers!

Q:What is Star Wars™: The Old Republic™?

A:Star Wars: The Old Republic represents a new approach to online entertainment, featuring immersive storytelling, dynamic combat, and groundbreaking companion characters. The game takes place in the Star Wars™ galaxy approximately three hundred years after the events of Star Wars™: Knights of the Old Republic™.

Q:When does Star Wars: The Old Republic take place in relation to the movies?

A:Star Wars: The Old Republic takes place more than 3,500 years before the rise of Darth Vader. The most powerful Sith Empire in history has emerged from deep space to attack the Republic and its legendary Jedi guardians. After decades of war, a tenuous truce has been established between the Sith Empire and the Republic, but events occurring in the game are leading the galaxy back to an all-out war.

Q:How does Star Wars: The Old Republic relate to Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic?

A:Star Wars: The Old Republic takes place approximately three hundred years after the events of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic (KOTOR). At the conclusion of the Jedi Civil War in KOTOR, Revan disappeared into unknown space in search of a great threat to the Republic, an expanding Sith Empire led by a mysterious Emperor who planned vengeance for his ancient Jedi enemies. Revan never returned from unknown space, but the Sith Empire did, kicking off a war with the Republic that lasted for decades. Now, despite the uneasy truce created by the Treaty of Coruscant, the tension among the divided star systems is threatening to once again tear the galaxy apart.

Considering the original KOTOR was my favorite game of all time, this should be amazing to play.

I have REALLY high hopes of this.

I hate MMO for the reason that you have to pay to play a game you already paid for. This makes me sad because this game looks good, but I'll probably not get it if you have to pay to play.

An MMO can cost less to play a month than 2 pints of beer at the bar, or a heroin beer and some nachos.

Exactly, and that is how I used to justify it. I just think people don't agree with it in principle.

I use to share the same perspective but if you buy a new game every four months ($60) compared to paying $15/month for new content to an existing game its pretty equal as far as cost goes.

This is whack. I don't see the appeal of these online world games at all. What ever happened to good single player games..play through it, enjoy, be done with it. I don't wanna sit there and pay month to month for some game that really goes nowhere. They should have made knights of the old republic 3.

I'll take the heroin beer and nachos.

So, you buy a new game every four months for $240 per year. One of those games costs $15/month to play, that is just an added cost. I'm still going to buy those other games. I only buy one or two games per year anyway. I also like my games to have replay value. I still play Kotor 1 & 2, and the last one was release at least five years ago, and I'll still be able to go back and play them in 5 years. An MMO doesn't really have that ability because in 5 or more years the players will have found another MMO that captures their interest. Yes I know WoW has been around for a long time, but how many other MMOs have been able to stay as popular? WoW is an exception not the norm.

WoW is the exception only in the sheer # of players, but there are plenty of other MMOs that have experienced constant growth over 5 years.

Part of a monthly fee goes towards constant adding of new content, so in 5 years the game can change significantly.

Plus the unique infrastructure requirements of an MMO make a monthly fee mandatory (though I think it's probably too high; the price point seems to be more a market thing).

I do agree with you about the initial cost of the game though; that's a pure market thing. In other markets (for example), the WoW client software is free and you just start paying to play.

I look at it more like dollars per hour of entertainment. While TF2 for me is FAR superior to a MMO in this respect, an MMO still is pretty good. $15 for tens (or hundreds if you are a real addict) of hours of entertainment, compared to a movie or a meal or drinking.

EDIT: I don't currently play any MMO, but this one will probably draw me in. The first Star Wars MMO was an interesting idea but didn't keep me.

Although, after watching the videos it feels more like Guild Wars than a true MMO. Have they said anything about a monthly fee officially?

I agree here, this game looks awesome but I hate paying monthly, especially since I have xbox live.

Oh well, tons of other good games coming out.

It looks okay. However, I don't see how they're really using the features of an MMO really. It feels like a single player game with a monthly fee.

I'm sure the story, lore and gameplay will be great, but the social interactions of the game like grouping, raiding, crafting/interdependency is something that is outside the realm of their expertise.

Also I agree with all the arguments that MMO's are ridiculous cheap when it comes to your entertainment dollars. You get a lot for the price you pay.
