I say a 1- I guess it depends on what kind of work you are doing.
During my working notice of where I was laid off from earlier this year; they were looking at this option. In fact I'm pretty sure one of the reasons I was let go was one of my co-workers was part time at university, so he has also been talking about taking time off to study.

1.
You have to do what you want, not what some employer tells you. If they let you go because of it find another job.
I quit my job and don't plan on working til January. Things always work out in the end.

It depends on your employer as well. For all you know, they're looking for cost cutting measures but want to keep you on. That would potentially be a good balance for them.

The thing is, I don't know if they could keep me as an 80% FTE and drop me to 32 hours a week or something, or if it automatically goes to half-time/20 hours. Something to ask them, potentially.
I do accounting work at an oil & gas explorer/producer downtown.

So you are currently working 40hrs/week and want to go to 32hrs/week?

I think it depends what your job is. If you can be as effective working less hours, then it might be cost effective for your company and they'd think it was fine. If, in order to do your job, you need to be available 8 hours every day, it might be a bigger challenge to sell it.
I went from working 25 hours per week to full time in April after a year of them asking. I was just grateful for not being part of any of the layoffs. Now, if I wanted to go back to part time, I'm not sure my company would allow me to. I'd have to sell it hard. It really depends on your situation.

Just make sure you don't frame it as "hey I'm only really doing 30 odd hours of work anyway, so you'll get the same productivity for less money!" Obviously no one sets out to say that, but make sure that your reduced hours include a reduced role and be specific about what you think has changed to justify the lesser hours.

Yeah... we're going to need more situational context I think, like.. can you afford to risk it? (Do you want to afford to risk it?)... would it drastically increase your happiness, or what's the purpose of the roll back?
Does your boss/company like you? Just lots of questions before I plunge into your scale I guess.

Yes.
I work in a small team of 4 people. There has been talk of me taking on a more senior/leadership role in the group, possibly with me running a group of 4-6 people. The current lead on my team doesn't offer much leadership and lacks an ability to adapt to the changing complexities of the role.
The idea for me is that my work/life balance is completely out of whack right now. I don't want to get into a lot of my personal laundry in this thread - but I've got a lot of balls in the air. I missed 3.5 months of work earlier this year due when I was placed on short-term disability as I started sorting out some health issues.
So while I appreciate the support I'm receiving at work in terms of professional development, I think I need less time at the office and more time to sort out my personal life.

Tell them exactly that. If they don't understand (but it sounds like they will) then quit. Working for a place that isn't understanding isn't worth giving my time too IMO.

Quitting outright is not an option - the bank owns too many of my nice things.

So what I garner from this is:
Your company likes / appreciates you and wants you to take on greater responsibilities and..
you have a legitimate reason for scaling back hours... so I'd go with a 1-2.
Companies are starting to appreciate good talent, if you get a good vibe from your company I think it's a risk you take.
Not so ######ed in my opinion.

Okay that is fair. I didn't know your situation.
What about finding another job in the same field? Asking for max 32 hours.
Of course only if your current company says no.

Approached them today regarding doing this on a short-term basis. The tone was generally supportive. We'll see how it goes from here.

Quitting is always an option. Sounds like changing your lifestyle to make it an option isn't an option you want to look at.
I went from a full time position 40 hours a week, ~$40k a year job to a part time, 25 hour a week, way less a year position, and I wouldn't change it for the world. Wouldn't mind full time which is in the works, but it's all in how you handle it. The bank has me by the berries too, but it just meant that I cut down on the HD channels I had, amongst other things.
Do what you need to do, but if you're not happy, and you're employer isn't willing to budge (even thought it sounds like they are), you always have other options, its all about what you're willing to do to make them work.
