St. Pete Times

Game Story

After defeating the Senators earlier in the season the Lightning fell 6-2 on Tuesday. After the Senators GM had vowed revenge earlier in the week GM moon tried to get his team ready to ensure this did not occur but the team failed to react to his efforts. Neither goalie played well for the Lightning as Felix Potvin allowed 5 goals on 32 shots and John Grahame allowed a goal on the only shot he faced.

GM moon:

“Once again the goaltending is inconsistent and it hurt us. Although relying on Ferguson and Somik to provide the offense we are going to be in trouble. I am not too mad because with a young team you can expect to see these types of mistakes, but would like to limit the mistakes for the rest of the season.”

There were many Lighting that had poor games as Shane Hnidy was -4 and Lindgren, Hemsky, Bougeniki and Sekeras were all -3.

The Lightning don’t have time to concern themselves with this loss as they head to the center of the universe and will take on the Leafs on Wednesday. The good news for the Tampa Lightning is that Scott Young will be rejoining the team after recovering from his hamstring injury.

GM moon:

“We expect a better effort tomorrow and with Scotty coming back we hope that will help to rejuvenate the offense and hopefully that will translate to a better overall game.”

The Ducks want to put in a Formal League Protest for todays game.

In today's 5-3 loss the Ducks were always shorthanded.
The Blues Played with 5 Centres, 5 Right WIngers and 7 Defencemen (All players did skate as they all had at least 1 shot or PIM or a hit). That means with goalies they dressed 23 players!

I hope the CPHLFA joins me on this one?!?! The Ducks fans had to sit and watch the Ducks try to fight against adversity, down 5-1 they faught to make it 5-3 but it was too little too late. I hope the CPHLFA says something to the League as well.

Blues lines:
Centre
Serge Aubin
Trevor Linden
Petr Cajanek
Peter Forsberg
Patrick O'Sullivan

LW
Tomi Kallio
Henrik Zetterberg
Toni Koivisto
Patrik Stefan

RW
Adam Mair
Mariusz Czerkawski
Jochen Hecht
Fredrik Modin
Brad Chartrand

After going down 3-0 early in the second, the Leafs stormed back to go up 5-3 before giving up two straight. This was a purely offensive affair, with the Leafs outshooting the Thrashers 45-36, including a 6-0 thrashing in OT. Lead centre Doug Weight came out of the affair with the first star, while linemate Alexei Kovalev was shut out of the star elections, despite putting in a monumental 7 shot, 6 hit performance in playing 29 minutes of the game.

In Baby Leaf news, the St. John Leafs won 3-2

Pens pull off upset victory!!

Much to the shcok of many the Pens entered the Fleet center and came out with a victory. The Pens beat the bruins 4-2 on strong performance by the third line. Jason Krog added 2 goals and Lance Ward did his part chipping in with 2 assists. Goalie Mike Dunham was victorious in his first game in a Pens uniform stopping 20 of the 22 shots coming his way. When asked about teh win GM/ Coach Goffie directed all the credit to his Penalty killers.

" I have to give the credit for this win to the penalty killers. We didn't play with the most control tonight and took some stupid penalties. Luckily for us we killed off all 7 power plays that they had. Dunham also deserves some credit winning his first start as a Penguin! "

Game Stars

1 - Jason Krog (PEN)
2 - Mats Sundin (BRU)
3 - Marty Reasoner (PEN)

Next up for the Pens is the mighty Preds

Panthers 3 Islanders 2

Giving Weeks the night off, Marc Denis came in a was great in helping his team beat the Islanders. The win gave the Panthers 46 points which allowed them to leap over yet another team in the Gretzky conference. The Panthers are not out of the playoff race just yet and they hope to continure their winnign ways tomorrow night against the pesky Devils.

The 4th line was the difference tonight as Milan Kraft played his 1st game in a very long time, but was a huge factor. He had 2 assists in only 2 minutes of play while going +2. Ivan Novoseltsev and Jason Blake also continued their hot play as they also contributed offensively.

Game Stars

1 - Eric Daze (ISL)
2 - Sheldon Souray (PAN)
3 - Ivan Novoseltsev (PAN)

Well thats a tough one.

Despite outplaying and outshooting the Jackets 11-8 in the opening frame, Goaltending lets us down, letting the Jackets jump out to a 3-0 lead 6 minutes into the game. Thats a tough scoreline to come back from against any team.

Some positives, though... Ovechkin scores 2, his 11th and 12th of the season... Hammer extends his point streak to 8 games with 2 assists... Roberts gets another point... Teppo with 2 assists as well.

Wild Find Offense

Reunited After 2 months

18 goals in 3 games.

2 wins and 1 tie.

Are the Wild back on track? They certainly hope so.

Indeed, Minnesota looks to have regained their form in the past 3 games. The latest result - a 7-1 rout of the Stars must be particularly gratifying considering the struggles the Wild have had against that team.

GM Grant Farhall was pleased.

"Certainly this is a team we have struggled against. In fact, in many ways our slupm began against the Stars when we only got a couple points in 3 games against them. So perhaps this win can be a turning point the other way".

Paul Kariya continues to lead the Wild offense with 2 goals and 1 assist. Other newcomers such as Jere Lehtinen and Tomoas Vokoun also turned in strong performances.

The Wild play next against another team they have struggled against - the Calgary Flames. Garth Snow is expected to get the start.

Game Notes
- Ben Clymer recorded his first point as a member of the Wild
- Dan Boyle is expected to be inserted back in the lineup after missing 2 games with a minor injury
- Keith Carney led the team with a +4 performance.

Crap, all the teams that were suppose to lose ended up winning tonight. Wings playing there worst hockey of the year. To make things worse we play our 5th game in a row tomorrow vs the Oilers. I am thinking there could be some roster tinkering happening!

Rangers 7 - Hurricanes 3

Wow, that was un-expected. Rangers start the game slow. Going down 2-1 after the first period but score 3 goals in the second and third to pull out the victory. Since acquiring Samsonov, Sergei has put up huge number. Sergei is on a 7 game point streak and has 8 goals and 5 assists in 9 games.

Game Stars

1 - Sergei Samsonov (RAN)
2 - Bryan McCabe (RAN)
3 - Jocelyn Thibault (RAN)

Game Highlights

Goals - Samsonov & Adams - 2
Assists - Samsonov & McCabe - 2
Points - Samsonov - 4

Isles lose again.

The loss has left Isles GM confused. Was there one too many trades made? Have these trades just been bad ones?

If the Isles lose tomorrow, there will be even more moves.

Senators GM did not hide the fact that he was upset with the teams effort the last time we played the Lightning.

"We Challenged the team to play with much more Intensity and they responded"

Led by thier Capitan the Senators beat the Lighting 6-2
Sakic led by example and scored a goal and had 2 assists and was named the Games first star. Thats the kind of leadership we expect from our Capitan.

Following his example 5 other players also had multie point games.

The Games 3 stars were Sakic, Havlat (3A) and Daigle (1G 1A)

Other notables were Jovanovksi with 2 assists Harntell with 2 assists Alfredsson with a Goal and assist. Klesla scored his 7th goal of the year as well and is playing his best hockey of the season.

Next up a Game VS the Always tough Rangers.

Canadiens Flounder vs Buffalo.
No other way to explain it. Facing the injury depleted defense core of the Sabres, the Habs players expected an easy victory. Beerfund is livid. He went on one of his famous rants: "I know we had some guys that were tired, a couple on the IR. Sure our top defensive dman went down early in the first period, but the effort was lacking. We had 32 shots, but they were from the outside, no one going towards the net. In a word, pathetic. I'm going for beer, I'll bring my cell phone and laptp with me. Give me a call if you think you can offer the Habs an offer which will benefit your club and mine. I'm willing to move a top forward for a good defensman and a 2nd/3rd line forward. "

SABRES SURPRISE THEMSELVES
Gerber and patchwork blueline beat the Habs

Things weren't looking good for Buffalo as they headed into a matchup against the always strong Habitants without blueliners Robyn Regehr, Scott Niedermayer and Jay McKee and with Wade Belak and John Michael Liles also banged up. Things got worse when prospect Maxim Kondratiev was delayed getting out of Rochester, leaving the team with only 4 healthy dmen Cory Sarich, Mark Eaton, Lubo Visnovsky and newcomer (and former Sabre) Shawn Heins. Things got even worse when Visnovsky was lost to injury.

The team received a yeoman effort from Sarich , EAton and Heins and moreso backup tender Martin Gerber who kicked aside 30 shots for the win. Gerber is now 6-5 on the season and is one of the league's top backups.

The Sabres were paced up front by Nils Ekman and Ziggy Palffy, and find themselves 3 points out of a playoff spot. Despite the injuries Sabres are 8-2 in their last 10.

Interesting rumours out of Buffalo have the Sabres dealing as many as 2 star players and multiple prospects in attempts to secure some healthy blueliners and forward depth. Server problems have put any future deals on hold, however.

REPEATING: KINGS BRING WINGS STINGS

Yesterdays' game was a monumental four point victory for the Kings over the Wings, and possibly Dan Cloutier's best game this season as he posted his 4th shutout of the year.

An early goal by Jonathan Girard would all the Kings needed in this one, although Gomez and Peca padded the lead in the second period.

Despite the victory the Kings still haven't a playoff spot all their own, as no fewer than four teams (Kings, Wings, Avalanche, and Blues) find themselves tied in the point standings at 59.
