Default New portable photo radar type

Seems like the Edmonton police service is trialing a new type of portable photo radar instead of parking the vans at the side of the road. Apparently these units were set up a few days ago and it's probably only a matter of time before they make it down here to Calgary.

What's sneaky about these things is they look like regular roadside electric boxes from a distance. Just a heads up for you guys to start looking for these.

We've had oen like this down in Lethbridge for quite some time, I would say two years or so. They will put it on the side of the main road then go park on a side street, or go hide in the coulees. They have to be within a certain distance from the box beacause once the box detects a speeder the dude in the vehicle needs push a button to I dunno....process the photo or something.

There was a story, about a year ago down here that some crazy guy shot the thing with a .22 I believe, which wouldn't have to bad but one shot missed and hit a kid in a passing truck.

Gotta figure out a way to raise revenues one way or another.

Its only a matter of time before someone drives up and takes it away though.

I can see those things, once they're known to people, getting violently vandalized.

I won't do it myself, but I won't complain if someone else does it.

Just another reason to have a radar detector.... on that note, I turned off K and X band's in mine. Is it safe to say that police on the highway/city are always on a ka or laser?
I was sick of every grocery store setting off alarms.

I only ever get ka or laser hits around here... X band on my V1 is always squawking like crazy which is one of the downsides of that unit. What band does laser some up on? I was thinking it was X as it sounds the same, but I'm by no means an expert.

Or another reason to slow down in town. I must say, my work truck is speed monitored and for the most part I like just crusing along at the posted speed. I use speed like hell to save 5- 10 mins, for the most part.

I have X turned off, I've kept K on but so far K has always been false when its altered. I'm thinking of turning it off as well like Realtor1 has done.

In the city I've sometimes been hit with Ka for photo radar but generally I see the vans anyway in advance, so I've generally kept my V1 off in the city. With these boxes I might have to start keeping the V1 on.

In the city, the big threat is laser, I use a jammer for that, it has paid for itself many times over.

What is preventing people from just taking it?

Sneaky, I hate that thing.

Didn't some dummy also try to run it over? It doesn't look all that solid, but IIRC it decisively won the collision with his truck.

Don't need to do anythign bad to it to mess them up, just run up and turn it so it's facing another direction. or, tip it.

I think they're in calgary too now for testing.

I don't think Edmonton has them, just Sherwood park.

For your V1, just leave laser and Ka on. In alberta I think there MIGHT be one car still running K, but everything I've ever seen in BC and alberta has been Ka.

If you drive down to the US turn it all back on. Loads of K and X still around down there.

A little off topic, but does anyone know where i can get a decent laser jammer and have it installed? Is ordering off of ebay the best bet?

Then what is the advantage of the box then? I would have thought the main advantage of them is that they are autonomous and don't need added labour time? (Even if it is just "special" constables that man the normal photo radar points). And if they need an actual constable nearby, they're better off just using laser and pulling people over (higher fines, demerits, etc.)

Perhaps a better tactic would be to stop using the same fleet of 2002 Dodge Caravans that everyone can pick out from a mile away?

I can't help but feel somebody answered his own question.
