Default Wireless router recommendations?

With the purchase of a new laptop and iphone, I suddenly find the need to get a wireless router. Being in a 900 sqft apartment I don't need much range on it, but I don't want it to be the bottle neck on internet speeds. Any recommendations? My laptop wifi card is N.

Also, will I need anything else besides the wireless router? Is there built in firewalls/security?

It depends on your internet provider. The telus modem acts as a router also. But if you get Shaw, you will need your own router. In routers, there is a built in firewall so generally you won't need too much else.

I have a D-Link one, but I heard great things about Linksys ones also. Belkin has some too. If you're only going to surf the net then any of them really will do. Seeing that your place is only 900 sqft, range is not going to be a problem. Find the cheapest one out there that you can.

Thanks for the info. My provider is through Novus which doesnt actually have a modem, as I plug my computer directly into a wall socket. This company apparently wired my area with fiber optic cable to a central backbone or something, thereby obviating the need for personal modems.

I was thinking about getting this one, seems quite fast and better organized then some of the others out there, and not that expensive.

If you are spending that mnuch on a wireless router, I would make sure it has shareport (to plug in any storage device as a network drive) and a print server. I posted some suggestions in another thread a while ago, let me find it.

Yes, it does seem to have "shareport technology". Is this alot for a *fast* wireless router?

It is not alot, but it certainly isn't the cheapest N router I have seen either, so you expect some 'high end' features to be available like Shareport, Print Server, Dual Bands etc. Maybe I just can't see where on the Newegg site it lists these features so I am thinking it is worse than it is.

To give you some point of refrence, I paid $80 for my Linksys WRT160N and an Airport Extreme runs at $180

Yeah looks like Newegg is trying to save money on product descriptions, so they just give a link to the manufacturers site. I guess that's a good point though, it doesnt appear to be dual frequency....what exactly will that affect? I'll likely only be using one device at a time.

Is that Airshare extreme a good choice? I'm not too concerned by its price if having the dual ghz adds alot more, and it will run on non-mac computers.

I don't know if dual band is worth it, it would depend on your usage. What it allows you to do is set exclusive use for each band for individual programs on your computer (if you have a dual band card as well), ie torrent on one band and surf on another band. This type of usage won't have that much of an effect, since any bottle necking from it will likely occur at your internet connection. I have had this work wonders at the University where network traffic itself is what hampers your connection.

Other than that the only reasons I see that it would be worth it, is in a situation where you are planning on streaming large amounts of media/data on the network on a constant basis. This would allow for you to avoid one messing with the other. I don't have the ability to stream media myself though, so I am mostly just guessing that this would be helpful.

Also, if you are having large amounts of interference on one band that is noticeably affecting your speeds, you might be able to switch bands to avoid it, but that's just a guess really.

As for the Airport Extreme, I have never used it personally, but it is pretty much the router with the most features of any I have seen. You can get a comparable router from DLink and Linksys I think, for a reduced price, but when I made the post I didn't want to search through product pages to find the right one. I think, and I might be wrong, that you can add an external HDD to the network through the Airport and it will be able to function as a Time Machine, but I am not sure on that at all though.

I want it just because of the 10/100/1000 ports.

Easy answer:

Anything that's not labelled D-Link, Belkin, Netgear, or Trendnet.

And 1000 mpbs LAN routing is only helpful if you have other Gigabit enabled PCs on your network.

Gigabit is fantastic for network sharing though.

It's so fast, my roommate can install games straight off my PC over the network without having to copy the .iso files...

....errr I mean I sell him my legit disc copies that I have no use for...yeah...

What wireless router do you(or your roommate) have. I have been thinking about getting one but have heard they can suck for gaming. Any recommendations?

I've heard the 320N is a good step up, but this one is quite good.

Wireless routing only sucks for gaming if A) you don't forward your gaming and torrent ports for all PCs, B) if no one is running dick-move programs like uTorrent instead of Azueus or Bitcomet, and C) you block your wireless access using something like WEP or the like...I myself recommend just using MAC filtering, as it's easier to set up, needs no passwords, and it's pretty damn unlikely someone will figure out what MAC address to spoof.

I purchased this a few weeks ago, its been very solid for me, and I do online gaming no problems at all there.

Signal strength is great in a 3 level (basement) condo.

Yeah, I think I'm going to get that one. Seems like it's been around long enough to have worked out some of the kinks, I just hope its setup isnt too technical for a n00b like me.

As an aside, what is this DD-WRT that is being thrown around? You can rewrite your wireless router with linux or something?

yes. dd-wrt allows you to turn certain routers into much more powerful ones. it started with the linksys wrt54g and spread from there. if i recall correctly, linksys decided to use linux for the router and then because of that had to release their firmware code because of the gpl license.

several years ago when i was investigating a new router purchase, i stumbled upon it. on their forums, they actually suggested at the time that buffalo technologies put out better quality routers.

here's what i got several years ago and have been really happy with it:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16833162134

obviously everyone has different needs, but just wanted to put a plug in for what i think is a great product.
