Default Perseid Meteor Shower

If you are out after sundown tonight keep an eye on the sky. Tonight should be the peak for the yearly Perseid meteor shower.

The best time to watch is between midnight and dawn Wednesday. Forecasters say the best stretch could come between 4 a.m. and 5 a.m. ET (1-2 a.m. PT), which would be after daybreak in Europe. Some Perseids might be visible late Tuesday night, and Wednesday night into Thursday morning could prove worthwhile, too.

I might stay up/get up for this and go drive towards China Beach where no street lights will be.

If you think you'll be able to move out of the way when the meteors strike, you are way over-optimistic. One second you see a streak of light in the sky, the next second you realize it's pointed at you, and before you can react all that's left is your shoes and a column of smoke.

Don't listen, people - stay inside your bunkers. When it's safe to come out and slay the first wave of aliens landing in the wake of their bombardment, your government radio will let you know.

This was oneof my favorite things when i was younger - watch out it the country. Sit out there all night with some buddies, fire up a box of cigars and chat and perseid-spot.

Lotta good discussions about life.

I'll try and snap some piccies tonight. So, basically, look to the NE around midnight?

How big are these usually? Just a streak of light?

Also, can any of you weather buffs tell me if there'll be cloud cover around Calgary at that time> It looks pretty clear right now,

ooo i'm giddy at the possibilities

Grrr... It's been gorgeous and clear every night this week and I've forgotten to look up. And of course tonight it's overcast and raining here. One time I was at the big meteor crater in Arizona for the Perseid peak - that was awesome!

Thanks to my new 3 week old alarm clock I'll be up @ 2am and 5am, so I can check it out.

How much will I be able to see without driving out of the city?

Saw about 3 major ones between 10:30 and 11:00, and another 3 or 4 very tiny ones.

Another advantage of living out in the boonies- I can see this as well as satellites buzzing over my house.

I should add that the moon might get in the way of things around 1 or 2 am.

Went out for about 10 minutes from 11:45 to 11:55 ... saw two. One was really large and bright, really cool actually.

But, then there was 5 minutes of nothing, so I came back in. I bore easily I guess...

And KevanGuy is right, the moon will be too bright very soon.

Saw one meteor and it was awesome, Around 11:30ish heading south-ish...Bright green and you could even see it breaking apart. Looked so close but probably ridiculously far away.

I went out onto our garage roof just after midnight. Was out for 5-10 minutes and didn't see anything. Like Draug I bore easily. Plus I'm counting on youtube videos from others who really got a good view of it.

3:30 here in Ottawa. Woke the kids and lay out in the back yard for about 20 minutes.

I saw 4 (1 whopper, 3 small) ... kids zero. Gave up.

I spotted one, then got bored. Not nearly frequent enough for me to whip out the camera.

I was outside for about an hour and a half. Thankfully there is a pretty good blanket of cloud over Edmonton, so I didn't see crap. I'm glad I brought beer with me.
