Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai Passes Controversial Law Limiting Women's Rights

A controversial bill that Afghan President Hamid Karzai promised to review before implementing quietly became law last month, allowing police to enforce language that stipulates a wife's sexual duties and restricts a woman's ability to leave her own home.

Karzai had promised to send the bill to parliament before it was published, but this week women's rights advocates learned it had already become an enforceable law despite heavy international and national criticism.

Video works for Americans only, I'm trying to find a different link for the rest of us.

Translation: Karzai's wife wears the pants in the household (our use too anyway)

I'm seriously getting sick of the ######ed Muslim laws, the whole middle east could be a glass factory and I would care less after the last 5 or so years.

It doesn't matter what he does though, since he's the choice of Afghan leader for the West. I mean, this has always worked out well for us in the past right?

....which way should we be aiming our weapons now? This is probably part of a greater goal for some absurd "peace" agreement with the Taliban.

So if they do this, why the hell are we there, and why the hell can't the Taliban rule the damn country?

^^^ As much I I know the majority of Afghans want us there, that we are doing good work, and that nothing comes easily, laws like this makes the whole thing very discouraging doesn't it? Though, it's not very 'democratic' if you say, ''enforce the rules the way we like or we leave''

What is the solution then?

This is probably an example of why nation building is not as easy as it sounds on paper. It is very difficult to change the culture of a whole nation, and that is what we have come up against. I guess this will be seen as a minor issue on the grand scheme of things, the Americans are not going to pull out simply because the Afghans refuse to adhere to the principles of freedom and democracy. They are really there to exert their influence in that region so as to cripple islamic terrorist groups and further American economic interests... the well being of the Afghani people is secondary.

What more can we do? Taking away their autonomy, by forcing them to adopt and rescind laws, could probably work against our efforts there. Then again, we poured out the blood of our people in an effort that led to them being free from Taliban oppression... is it not insulting to the international community when they continue to treat women as second class citizens? Many Canadians supported the Afghani mission so that the lives of their citizens would improve, and their people would obtain freedom. But the people we helped in the war ended up making it illegal for women to leave their home or withhold sex. >.<
