GAME 7: Battle of Alberta Part 1 for 2009 (STAMPS vs ESKIMOS)
Wow, that was an ugly win last game against the Bombers. The game were totally strange with one team dominated the first half then other team dominated the 2nd half. Talk about not playing the full 60 minutes.
Was it an overconfident for the Stampeders after dominating the Bombers in every facet of the game? Or was it because of Kelly's speech during the half?
One thing I noticed in the second half were the way the DLines were positioning. Two outside players lined up so wide that they had trouble coming back when running back Fred Reid started running. The pressure on the QB also sort of diminished in the 2nd half. Then of course, the Stamps abandoned the running game again. It is something I don't understand especially when your QB is not having such a good night in the first place. Burris I thought were good enough in the first half.
One thing I like was Burris started off with mixing up plays. The defense and special teams were also played well that half.
Quarterback: Henry Burris were good enough in the first half even though he was overthrowing his receivers. If he is off again against the Smos, it means trouble.
--- I really think playing against the Eskimos will wake Burris up and I think this is the beginning of his hot hands.
STARTER: Burris BACKUP: Nealy and Tate.
Running Back: Joffrey Reynolds were awesome again last game. I love that TD run he scored. He is pretty consistent when he is being use a lot. Hopefully the coaching staff does not abandon the run no matter what the score is.
--- we all know what happens when Reynolds is effective. The Defense from the other team usually gets caught cheating then bang Burris throws deep.
STARTER: Reynolds, Johnson BACKUP: Cornish and Cote
Offensive Linemen: The OLine struggled in the 2nd half against the Bombers. Because of the struggles, some of the OLine who usually consistent gets beat a lot and even Tsoumpas got hit by holding penalties a few times. It will be interesting against the Eskimos though because Centre Rob Lazeo will miss the game due to knee injury. I guess O'Neill will step in. It's different without Lazeo though because he is a tough cookie.
STARTER: Pilon, Newman, Lazeo, Tsoumpas and Archibald.
BACKUP: O'Neill, Gott, Ellis
Receiver: Nik Lewis played well last game. Titus Ryan finally got his first TD reception. That was an awesome TD and pretty important. He just outrun the defender on that play. I am glad Burris threw the ball really well on that play. I didn't notice Jermaine Jackson at all on that last game. I wasn't even sure if Blaine Kruger even played a down as a receiver. Looks like they tried to use Teyo Johnson on few plays
---- First half works well with the Stamps. Short passes to Lewis, Copeland and Reynolds were very effective. Even Ryan got the ball on a short pass. Cornish is starting to play better as an RB and receiver as well.
STARTER: Lewis, Copeland, Ralph, Jackson
BACKUP: Kruger, Johnson.
Defensive Linemen: Against the Bombers, the Stamps used Odell Willis and Justin Phillips on the outside. I think they did well especially in the first half. Not sure how Labinjo got injured but it seems like the Bombers took advantage of him not being around as they racked up lots of yardages on run plays. They had some success with pressurring Bishop in the first half but for some reason they changed their plan after Labinjo got hurt. IT doesn't look like Labinjo will be playing against the Eskimos. Miguel Robede will replace him in the lineup.
STARTER: Phillips, Simpson, Willis, Johnson
BACKUP: Robede, Fernand Kashama, Chevrier
Linebacking: The Linebacking weakness showed up last game. Fred Reid had a blast running the ball and Blackmon and the guys couldn't stop him. LB need to play much, much better and also needs to tackle better.
STARTER: James, Carpenter and Blackmon
BACKUP: Black, Calixte, Grootegood, Raymond
Defensive Back: DBs were okay. Anderson were good and bad. Bad, he is taking way too many penalties. I guess I can't blame him on one phantom pass interference call which prompted the Bombers to score after TD. Anderson also made a TD interception only to be called back due to roughing the passer penalties by Johnson. I thought it was a lame call because on the replay, he got tripped on the way to the QB.
STARTER: Browner, Amadi, Tate, Anderson, Collins
BACKUP: Lysack, Raymond
Special Team: Finally Burke Dales outplayed Sandro. He was awesome with his booming punts. Also recovered a fumble only to be called back by another penalty.
----- Stamps need to stay away from way too many unneccessary penalties. We are still tied in first place with 3-3 record along with the Eskimos and Riders. Game will be played Thursday night at Commonwealth Stadium.
GO STAMPS GO!!
More update before game day/time.

Memo to defence:
Ricky Ray will throw an 8 yard pass over the middle 99% of the time. You might want to watch for that.

ROSTER UPDATE and NOTABLES:
Good news, Stampeder R Ryan Thelwell will be back in this game. Also, OL Jon Gott, DLs Miguel Robede and Alain Kashama are in.
Bad news, DL Mike Labinjo and C Rob Lazeo will be out for this game. Also, R Blaine Kruger and DB John Eubanks are out.
As for the Eskimos, LB Maurice Llyod, DT Eric Taylor and DB Lenny Williams won't play.
Notable:
Henry Burris needs to pass for 239 yards to take over top spot of Stamps' all-time passing yardage. Flutie is currently #1 with 20,551 yards.
Jermaine Copeland leads the league in receiving TD with 4.
Stamps DB Dwight Anderson been having quite a good season so far but the negative part was he is also been penalized a lot.
Eskimos have the worst rushing attack in the CFL. Unfortunately the Stamps also have the worst rushing defense in the league.
The Stamps and the Eskimos are playing the next 3 out 4 consecutive games starting tonight. Both teams have the bye week after this game, then Calgary plays Toronto and the back-to-back Labour Day weekend game.
--- Stamps need to play the full 60 minutes against the Eskimos or any other teams. THey need to get Reynolds and Cornish involved early in the game and also not forget about them later in the game. With Labinjo out, someone has to step in rushing the QB inside. I believe Odell Willis will play on Labinjo's spot meaning whoever plays the outside will keep on using their speed to pressure the QB a lot. MLB Trey Blackmon needs to step up his game and stop the Eskimos RB from gaining some yardages on the run.
Most important, AVOID the unneccessary penalties.
GO STAMPS GO!!

That is what I am looking for in this game, a full 60 minute effort. Labinjo not playing is a huge loss imo. Hopefully Phillips and co. can fill the hole.

That was another pathetic call by the refs.
Two weeks in a row Calgary gets a garbage unecessary roughness call.
It is a contact game morons.

I know there are injuries but really Amadi is the best option we have out there?
That was awful coverage.

No suprise that it is a tie game after the first, I still wish the Stamps would give Reynolds the ball more especially on first down. Nik Lewis has over 80 receiving yards already. Poor coverage on that TD, I'm kinda surprised the Esks haven't tried running the ball more considering how poor the Stamps rush defence has been.

A couple of good drives, a couple of poor drives. The defence looked good up until the last Esks drive. Poor coverage lead to a big pass and catch for a TD.
