Default Habs send Cogliano to Florida

Montreal and Florida struck an agreement sending Andrew Cogliano to the Orange State (Sunshine State, whatever the heck its called). I really did not want to move youngster Andrew Cogliano as I feel he's one of the few bright lights in Edmonton. Matt was persistent though and put together a good package I couldn't say no to:

To Florida

Andrew Cogliano

To Canadiens

Jared Cowen
Zach Kassian
Blair Betts

Cogliano is a solid young piece Florida can build around for the future, and I get a 3rd/4th line center in Betts. To offset the difference, I get Cowen who slipped in the draft due to his knee surgery, and Kassian who is a big power forward that could be a top line guy or a 3rd/4th line grinder.

I don't love giving up young guys with proven upside, but I couldn't pass up receiving two very good prospects.

Thanks to Matt for his patience and for the deal. I feel cleaner now without an Oiler on my squad.

2 1st round picks and a 3rd/4th line player for Cogliano. I like this deal for simmer.

I did overpay a bit, but Cogliano is a good young offensive player who will be going on the top line with Gaborik and St. Louis or on the 2nd line with Foligno. I look at this deal as a dollar saver as well as he's only getting 1.0 million for this season.

Cowen and Kassian are at least 3 years away from having decent ratings, if they make the NHL at all, and Betts is a decent 3rd line C, but I have 4 3rd line centers, so I could spare one.

Nice deal for the Habs. Cogs is nothing special.

Yikes, serious overpayment for a player like Cogs

I don't know if a guy like Cogliano has as much value as he once did. With this new grid his old salary and age are now irrelevent when it comes to how much he costs. So although he's cheap this year for a 2/3 line guy, going foward I think he's a guy with second line upside.

If your team is well stocked with picks and prospects than it's easier to afford a deal like this for a guy like Cogliano. I'm not so sure the Panthers had that type of depth though. Lots of needs and the number of trade chips is dwindling.

I agree with the general consensus that I like the deal for Montreal.

Don't lie Neil, you see a 50 goal scorer in Cogs.

Maybe even 600 goals, 1300 points.

I would be happy if he hit half of those totals...

Haha, I just traded Cogs to Montreal in July. I'm pretty sure I know what type of player he is!

I like Cogs, but think that this is a big package to move to bring him in. I think the deal really hinges on how Kassian and Cowen pan out.
