Default Your thoughts on elliptical trainer brands?

I'd like to buy an elliptical trainer, but don't know where I should start looking, or what brands to consider.

Last year, we bought a stationary bike (Diamond Back - entry model) from Fitness Depot and have been happy with the purchase. The bike is reasonably sturdy, has basic programs and stats, doesn't take up too much space, and didn't cost an arm and a leg.

I'd like to add an elliptical to add some variety to my routine. Not looking for bells and whistles, just basic and well built. Size is important - I've got about 30 sq. feet to put it in, so I'd like a smaller machine. Plus, I'm nearly six feet tall and have 8' ceilings, so monster-sized machines are out. The smaller machines I've seen are squeaky and cheap & flimsy looking.

Any suggestions? Brands to consider? Avoid?

I should add its not just for me. Rico needs some help fitting back into his banana-hammock. I'm hopeful an elliptical trainer will be just the ticket.

Precor and Life Fitness are the gold standards when it comes to ellipticals.

We just bought one from Costco. I don't know much about it but my other half did a bunch of checking on it and said it was a good one for a good price. It was $700, I looked earlier this year and couldn't find any under $1300 really. This one is damn near professional grade, very quiet. It was at the Costco in Beacon Hill in the NW. Worth a look at considering the price alone.
