I agree, such a loss of life, and food. Such a waste.

What would that smell like? I mean, I know pig farms have an un-gawdly smell as it is, but now a fire has ripped through the whole place and (presumably) roasted most of the pigs which I imagine would be a delightful smell.

Could be good, could be bad. It's 50/50 as I see it.

Disclaimer: I am not a farmer, I don't know much about farming. I like pigs, in the pen and in the pan..

Having said that though, does anyone else feel like there should be some accountability here - 15,000 animals, in a confined area, and no fire suppression abilities? Is it reasonable to assume that normally you should not be able to run an operation where 15,000 animals can die in a fire like this?

Or am I being totally naive about safety on modern large scale farm operations?

Did this happen because it was a colony farm, as opposed to a conventional meat processor?

I'm sure the insurance company would have that on their mind as well.

And sclitheroe... I do believe there are no requirements for fire safety.

Pigs are so intelligent - they say on a par with dogs - I cannot bear to think about how they suffered. Factory farming is an absolute abomination.

I wonder why insurance companies would insure operations that aren't protected from fire...regardless, its a darn shame and a massive loss of life.

It's no more protected than our own houses. So why wouldn't insurance cover them, it is the point of insurance after all. The colonies usually have fire fighting capabilities on site as well (be it in the form of water trucks/pumps). It's a shame all that food is gone to waste now. Would've made for some good pulled pork.

Holy crap, that whole area would have smelled like bacon.

They could have put the fire out with drool.
