Default Satchel Paige, a baseball great

Not sure if anyone is interested, but Satchel Paige had a unique and controversial path to baseball's Hall of Fame. A profile feature in the LA Times today.

I've read a little bit about Satchel Paige. Most of it in Buck Oneil's book "the soul of Baseball". And of course, the excellent Ken Burns PBS series. I will have to find this book as well.

I would also recommend the HBO movie that was based around the 3 negro league star players Paige,Gibson & Robinson's rush to be the first into the MLB. Can't remember the name of it right now, but it was a damn good movie.

That was a good movie. Gibson was mentally ill and Paige was too old, even though he would end up pitching in the Bigs over the age of 40. We hear all the time that Jackie Robinson was not the best player in the Negro Leagues at the time. He was picked not only for his baseball ability, but for his personality and character as well.

Hahaha. Funny story. My late grandfather had a baseball signed by Satchel Paige and my dad and my uncle played ball with it and scuffed it up. The autograph was still there but it was barely readable.
