And the Murder Capital of Canada is.....
Abbotsford! Watch out baby Flames! Calgary ranked 6th.
http://www.calgaryherald.com/news/Ab...294/story.html
Abbotsford’s murder rate of 4.7 per 100,000 people put it ahead of Winnipeg at 4.1, Regina at 3.8, Edmonton and Kelowna at 3.4, Calgary at 2.9 and Vancouver at 2.4.
hmmmm Vancouver ranked 7th. hehe

There are two statistics where Vancouver beats Calgary that surprise me. This and the fact that Vancouver now has an average income higher than Calgary's.

I was going to assume the reason was gang/drug violence, but is Abbotsford a hot bed for gangs or are the people just crazy?
Article does say exactly why.

I knew it! I knew it was Edmonton all along, even when it was Abbotsford I knew it was Edmonton!

While the overall crime rate is down according to the report, there are hot pockets of increased violent crime in Canada- with Abbotsford and Edmonton amongst them.

I was going to guess Winnipeg.
But looking at Abbotsford's population being between 125-150K depending on how it's being counted; with that small of a city it only takes a couple of murders to spike the rate up high.

Vancouver exists as a bunch of seperate municipalities. So it's likely that statistic includes just Vancouver. Although East Vancouver is a bit of a dive, West Vancouver is probably the nicest place in Canada. Overly priced, but extremely nice.

Homicide rates were highest in the western CMAs of Abbotsford–Mission (4.7), Winnipeg (4.1), Regina (3.8), Edmonton (3.4), Kelowna (3.4), Calgary (2.9) and Vancouver (2.4).
With 103 homicides in 2008, Toronto had the most homicides of any CMA. However, taking population into account, Toronto's rate of 1.9 homicides per 100,000 was slightly higher than the national average of 1.8.

Manitoba homicide rate of 4.5 / 100,000. We're still way under anything in the US.

I remember watching a CBC documentary about 3-4 years back. They were comparing Winnipeg to Baltimore. It would take you 10-14 days to be able to buy a gun in Winnipeg and it would take you 10 minutes in Baltimore.
Hmmm and they were wondering why the murder rate was 20X higher in Baltimore. hehe.

I'm afraid this isn't entirely accurate because several US states with comparable populations have significantly lower murder rates. For example there's Idaho, with 2.2/100,000, New Hampshire, with 1.4/100,000, and even West Virginia, with 3.7/100,000 (just for the record, though, I would rather live in Manitoba than WV 7 days a week and twice on Sundays)

There is a lot of gang activity in Abbotsford and the Fraser Valley in general (Surrey/Langley). In fact, the leader of the Canadian contingent of the Triads supposedly lives in Chilliwack.
If there is one thing Vancouver is good at, it's pushing the crime out to the edges. It's counter-intuitive to people in most North American cities where the innercity is usually where most of the violent crime is. Downtown Vancouver is surprisingly safe compared to places like Abbotsford, Surrey, Maple Ridge and even Mission.

I was hoping for Winnipeg and then reply with a completely horrible joke somehow tied to slurpees... but... alas, I can't do it.

That surprised me the most.
Thanks by the way.

That makes sense because it's far more cost effective to have a grow op in a four bedroom house on the outer edge of the metro area then in a million dollar two bedroom condo in downtown Vancouver. Since most criminals have low incomes, it's hard for them afford living in Vancouver.

You'd be surprised how cost effective it is to be a homeless methed-out crackhead with a knife in downtown Van.
