Default Sports Guy Ending His Column?

I just finished reading Bill Simmons’ latest column on ESPN, and his last paragraph confused the hell out of me. Basically the column is about his dad retiring, but then he sums everything up by announcing his own retirement. I’m not sure how many of you are fans of his, but to me this is a huge loss for ESPN.

If this belongs in the Other Sports section can somebody please move it there.

Huge simmons fan, but if you read the paragraph it says.

To further close the circle: I'm retiring from this space in ESPN The Magazine after seven happy years. Like my father and his superintendency, The Magazine was never an ideal match for me -- I hate advance deadlines and word counts -- and yet, I couldn't be happier with how it all turned out. It's just time for me to try some new things, that's all. And you have to know when it's time. I learned that from my father.
He's basically going to stop writing for ESPN the magazine, because like he said, he hates advanced deadlines and word counts, I"m sure he'll still be writing his columns for ESPN.com.

Just ESPN the Magazine. Not Page 2 or his podcast. He is the highest rated podcast by far on ESPN so he is still staying within ESPN

That would make more sense. I was caught in a panick moment and thought of the worst case scenario.

Yeah.

This has raised questions however that Simmons might not stick with ESPN for much longer. He has the talent and the following certainly to make it big on his own.

No doubt. He's already written a couple of books and he would probably do great with his own Podcast ala Adam Carolla.

I think he's been slipping the past few years, and his extreme homerism for everything Boston gets a little tiring, but he's still a legend. I remember when I first discovered him around 5 years ago, I was telling everyone how they've got to read his stuff. Man that guy could make me laugh. He's had me literally almost in tears from laughing so hard at his articles in the past.

He already has his own podcast. Adam Carolla has been a guest a few times before.

That's what I meant. And Simmons has also been a guest on Carolla's podcast as well. It was actually pretty funny and touched on some pretty weird topics. I think Simmons enjoyed being able to launch a few F-Bombs without worrying about The Man.
