Wow, Well no more home town deal. Doubt he will make it to Denver either.

I guess he saw he wasn't getting anywhere with Calgary. Can't blame him.

Let's just hope he doesn't turn into another Ryan Wilson.

Speaking of Peters, he just signed a two year deal with Minnesota yesterday.

Exactly my thoughts as well. If I were him and saw the Ivianis (sp?) and Jackman signings, I would be booking a 1-way ticket out of this franchise. #1 thing I hate about Sutter is every year he preaches that we need to have 1-3 players from the farm up on the big squad, yet we never see it. Sure the vet guys might beat out the youngsters at camp but game speed is much different from practice speed. PLEASE GIVE THESE GUYS A CHANCE SUTTER!

Lombardi, Boyd, Moss, Giordano, Phaneuf, Pardy, Nystrom, McElhinney all say hi. John Armstrong likely would have made the Flames already if not for injuries.
Some years the prospects on the farm win their spots, some years they don't. Sutter isn't saying he hands spots to prospects every year, he has them compete for spots.
In Van der Gulik's case in fact, he was a victim of his own poor training camps. You can go find quotes on him from previous camps, he disappointed and failed to ever win a role.
Sutter has already gone on record this week saying the Flames will give every opportunity this fall to guys like Mikael Backlund, Brett Sutter, John Armstrong, John Negrin and Matt Pelech at the expense of veterans. If they fail to win their roles, a veteran stays. If they impress, they can force trades/movement.
Not sure where this perception that we never use farmhands is. I think it has more to do with the fact that the cupboard was fairly bare when Sutter came aboard and we didn't even have a farm team. Its taken him a few years to restock the system and thus the quality of young players we've had competing for roles has been pretty mediocre the last few years.
Our farm system is now at the point where I think we can expect more impact players to be developed.
Did you want Sutter to hand DVG a role regardless of his training camp performance?

Um, looking at the roster right now there is definitely a place for Backlund, Sutter, and Armstrong to step in, and if we trade or bury a dman we could also bring in Pelech. Just because spots won't be handed out like candy doesn't mean they're not there, they have to be earned and the young players will be given the opportunity to do so just as they always have.

It's pretty crazy that they are still so high on Armstrong. So many injuries.
But when he does play, he is usually an impact guy on the farm. He has a deadly hard slap shot. Which I hope isn't gone from his shoulder injury.

I thought Van der Gulik was ready for a 4th line role with this club. I hope he sees more success in Colorado, I think he's severely underrated. Great energy player for the bottom lines. Would loved to have seen him given Jackman's spot instead.

David Van Der Gulik was slow to develop, and it's too bad someone is willing to take a bigger risk than the Flames were willing to. At 26 he has his best season ever, 40pts in 60 games, but its shortened by injury. He scored four goals in the playoffs this year as well.
I guess Darryl figured with all of the forward movement into the the AHL (Nemisz, Cameron, Wahl, Bouma) some of the veteran draft picks had to be let go. He could be a serviceable 4th line player like Eric Nystrom in at the NHL level, but his size keeps leaving him overlooked.
Cam Cunning was resigned this year with similar stats, but he's 6'1". I understand the decision but I feel awful for all those guys with talent under 6 feet tall.
I wish him luck, but we don't have to worry, the AHL cupboard is stocked for the time being.

Guys he's 27 years old and has never shown he will be a nhl regular. Players like him are a dime a dozen.

DVDG is as good as he is going to get. There is still an outside chance that Chucko could take another step forward.

One is several years younger than the other. And one had injury problems last year. I'll let you take a guess as to which one is which.

I love how people like to assume the player has no say in the matter.
The truth is, Chucko actually had little say in the matter. He is a simple case of "here's your qualifying offer. Sign here."
DVG was an unrestricted free agent. His fate was entirely in his own hands. For all you know, the Flames did try to sign him, but he made the decision to go elsewhere on the belief that it would help his career.

Pretty much but our team is hardly stocked full of players with upside. Most of them are 4th line pluggers. I would have at least kept him around another year or two.
