Default Massa suffers life threatening injury in F1 qualifying

Crazy! he got hit in the head by a spring weighing 800 grams off the Brawn in front of him. Knocks him unconscious and he drives straight into the barriers. Wow onboard camera. It's like a little speck that hits him.

Just last week Henry Surtees died after a wheel bounced back onto the track and hit him in the head killing him instantly. This was sooooo unlucky.

When you reach the speeds they do, everything is dangerous.

Yeah I saw that crash, that was absolutely ridiculous in terms of how it happened. He required surgery on his skull. I hope he is okay.

Holy crap look at that pic when they extracted him from the car.

I think he must have regained consciousness before he crashed. The onboard shows that he was applying the brakes before he hit the tires.

holy crap, look at the damage to that helmet. If that thing had been a little lower and to the left it would have gone right through his head.

He is in "satisfactory condition" in a Hungarian hospital. I'm glad to hear this.

The one replay shows, he was full throttle when he was on the brakes after getting hit in the head. Glad he is ok.

I saw the crash, but I was too tired to watch the rest of qualifying so I went to bed. Didn't realize how badly he got hit.

Are they confirming it was Barrichello's spring that hit him? I know his suspension failed, as they were talking about it, but they weren't sure what hit Massa.

Wow, now in the race Alonso loses his tire. The little piece on the wheel first flew off and later on in the lap the wheel flew off. Luckily no one was near, but still. Holy debris batman!

After these two incidents, I wonder if it would make sense to put a full enclosure over the driver? I would assume there is a good reason not to do so, since it seems like something that would have been thought of a long time ago.

In case of a cockpit fire a full enclosure could be deadly.

Good news coming out of Hungary regarding Massa.

Sounds like Schumacher might come back to replace Massa for the rest of the season.

Both Schumacher and Ferrari confirm that Shumacher will be entered in the upcoming races until Massa recovers. Should be very interesting, especially with the recent resurgence of Ferrari.

http://www.worldcarfans.com/10907292...e-felipe-massa

"The Italian team said it will enter Schumacher as the alternative competitor of Massa's car number 3 following a training programme for the German, who earlier this year hurt his neck in a motorcycle testing crash."
