You will officially fall from grace as a decent Calgarian, to a scourge on our fair city, what with the havoc you Airdrians wreak on our beloved Deerfoot. How dare you.

i guess it's just me, but I have no idea why anyone would want to live in Airdrie, it seems like the worst of both worlds. You're not in the city so you dont really get to utilize all the positives of a cosmopolitan city without driving everywhere, AND you also dont get the charm and peaceful nature of a small town, since Airdrie is more or less like any Calgary suburban community. There are no outstanding characteristics to set it apart.
I can see why somebody would want to live in say, Cochrane, since it has some charm, is close to the mountains, and is still a short drive from the city. But Airdrie, I don't get it.

I agree 100%, which is why we just bought a house there and will be moving in at the end of the month. It will add a bit to the commute but being close to the mountains negates that for me. I'm hoping the ring-road and new c-train station in Crowfoot will improve traffic, but then again were talking about Calgary so I won't get my hopes up.

My only knowledge of Airdrie is based upon the people I see getting on and off the "Airdrie Commuter" bus downtown everyday. Those people look depressed.

Airdrie, a place where you get more of a house on a large lot.
NOT.
Was there on Saturday visiting friends. The houses on the main road right by 8th street have yards like townhouses in Calgary. And they are still calling them "large".
I don't get it either. I have 3 friends that live there and their all of their yards are tiny. And the houses are not that much cheaper than in the city.
So what's the point?

Not that i disagree cuz you couldn't pay me to live in airdrie, but, airdrie is actually booming right now. So, in that regard, you made a good purchase.
As for the rest of it....see above posts.

Wow what a dumpfest on my new home...
We decided to move there for exactly this reason. We bought a big house over 1600 sq with a good sized yard. We search comparables in CGY and found the same house in Hidden Valley (our preferd cgy location) would have been 60-80k higher. We can see the mountains from our new bedroom and a playground is a block from us. It fit for us.

Despite all the debbie downer's in this thread there is nothing wrong with Airdrie. It is just slightly cheaper for housing but then you have to drive to Calgary to enjoy the "big city" type things.
It is nice because there is never any traffic jams, at least not like Calgary.
It really is just convenience vs price. Even driving to the city 5 days a week will still be cheaper than a Calgary house but then again you have to drive to Calgary 5 days a week.
As for things like restaurants I have no idea it has been a while since I lived near there.

You will joining the many of us who left Calgary for a slower pace of life. Or as DESS called us, a parasite community dweller. Be prepaired to hear Calgarians tell you that you don't pay your fair share when using Calgary transit and the LRT. I live in High River but i'm sure Airdrie is a nice place to live.

If you value your privacy and like to be left alone then I guess Airdrie would be great.
Hell, I have a friend who lives in Cranston and I finally drove down to visit him last weekend for only the 2nd time in 4 years. It's just too far away. And he never comes downtown to hang out of 17th, catch movies or go to a baseball game becuase he doesn't want to drive so far. Might as well move to Lethbridge.

I live in High River and a good friend of mine lives near the Foothills hospital . I visit him at least once a month. It's a shame that people allow distance to be a factor when they decide to visit

I'm not too sold on the price. I went to a couple of open houses in Airdrie and the prices seemed comparable except they throw in a few more perks. In the show homes here, all the furniture is for show whereas in Airdrie it comes furnished like that. Furniture can be hella expensive so it could be worth while but then again you're a good 10-15 minutes from Calgary DT and in the bright early mornings... even 1 minute matters more to me. Also really depends on the type of job.

Just a Q on buying a mansion sized house, what is the need for big houses when there is only 2 people? I could understand if you plan on having little rugrats running around, but for 2 people, damn thats gonna be a lot of cleaning.

If someone can afford to buy a mansion I highly doubt they do they're own cleaning.
