FIFA Confederations Cup 2009
Hey guys, as most soccer is just gearing down we get to watch the World Cup Warm-up, obviously this tournament favours the Soccer Superpowers but we'll get to see some pretty awesome first round matchups.
I'll be cheering for Brazil for this one, here is the opening round schedule, it starts June 14th:
I'm looking forward to Brazil vs. Italy and Brazil vs. USA, those two games should be amazing.

What is this tournament? Why are there two European sides? Will the a-teams be playing?

Generally the A teams will be playing as its kind of a World Cup tuneup, its in the host country and teams use this tournament to get their World Cup rosters closer to finalized.
The Confederations Cup is a tournament for all the winners of the various geographical Conference tournaments. For example, Spain is in because they won the Euro Cup, Italy is in because they won the World Cup, Brazil is in because they won the Copa America (in style against a stacked Argentina no less ) ditto for all the other nations, they won their respective local tournaments.
Its a bit of a 'throw-in' tournament but its international soccer so it'll be fun to watch.

A lot of countries use the Confederations Cup to experiment on new roster players to prep them better for the World Cup.
Italy for example is sending a roster featuring several players who will be getting their first cap or featuring in their first major tournament, blended in with most of their healthy regulars. I think Brazil and Spain are doing similar things.

My Guess: Spain beats Brazil for the title.

Honestly, I'll be happy as long as Italy or the USA dont win it, but I think its going to come down to Spain and Brazil and I think its going to be a battle of the EPL strikers....Torres vs. Robinho.

I'd be glad to watch anything that wasn't an excuse for soccer like watching Toronto FC. I watched them for a half last night and good grief they are pathetic.

Anybody but Brazil.......or Italy.
I'll cheer for South Africa, wanna see the home nation get really pumped for next June.......I just hope my portuguese side can actually score a goal and qualify.....3 straight scoreless draws against opponents they should beat. Anyways, they need to win their remaining 5 to do it and it starts this Saturday in Albania. FORCA PORTUGAL!!!

Will this be on tv? Doesn't CBC have the FIFA rights in Canada now?

Come on New Zealand!!
geez, not much to choose from out of those teams.. I guess out of the teams that actually have a chance I'd have to go for Spain.
I'll always have a soft spot for this tourney though since one of Canada's best results came in the 2001 edition when we drew Brazil 0-0.

Italy = Overrated and it shows when they barely squeaked out of the group stage in the Euro cup, I really enjoyed watching them get brutally embarassed . They got lucky at that WC.
It'll be nice having a World Cup with no Ronaldo the wonder boy, diving will be down by 80%.

Nope, probably 100 percent, because he's the only one that does it.

Italy may want to concern themselves with actually qualifying for 2010 before they start filling out their bench. If they drop the match in Dublin they're facing a playoff, which is a massive risk.
I'm pulling for New Zealand, based solely on their participation being completely by default.

To be fair, most top teams have relatively easy runs until deep into the knockout (when they start to face each other) just because the WC is so watered down. (South Korea's Ref scandal with Spain, Italy and Portugal notwithstanding).
Italy was the best team in the world in 2006. They had the perfect balance. Problem is, its now 2009. The team proved to be way over the hill in 2008 with an inept coach and shocking call-ups. Lippi has not really proven to be the magic elixir, but at least he knows the writing is on the wall and is scrambling to find new key parts. Trouble is, a lot of these guys are in their late 20s-early 30s, while the future stars are watching the games on TV like us.

Nope, I trust the Italians will pick up the slack, but for them its a group effort, not just one guy. I'll never forget the Euro Cup with Figo emphatically motioning for Ronaldo to 'get up' when they were getting smoked by Germany.

I doubt it. Skilled guys tend to dive. They really aren't sending any this time. Its a pretty grinder team this year, which is sad.
