Default VIN Numbers

I'm in the process of selling my Jeep and someone with some online interest (it was posted on Kijiji) has asked for the vin number to do a lien search (and I assume a car history report).

Anything he can really do with the VIN that can do any harm?

I wouldn't worry too much about it, anyone could walk up and see your VIN # on your dashboard plate through your window.

That's what I'm thinking but remember those lovely email forwards going around about that being a new scam and going to dealers to get keys cut and what not. Basically probably just a bit of stupid paranoia on my part.

You have every right to be paranoid, but, Krazycanuck is right. Your VIN is on your dash for all to see. Just let them run it. No one should buy a vehicle without doing a lien search.

Honestly at a lot of dealers you can take the VIN and talk your way into getting a key cut, but there are easier ways to steal cars than that.

It's common practice. I wouldn't worry about giving it out.
